There are certainly less explainable figures out there. I had my doubts because it's not like his appeal isn't passe, and to say that a number of people would be waiting this long and with the kind of reaction people got from Suit and Tie, and even Mirrors, actually... I think what happened here is major promo: there are banners everywhere for this album, and the radio deal seems to be working consistently. Also, people have been treated to a small but constant load of good publicity, so his hiatus worked. I think that his star power comes from the fact that he's just an all around classic American entertainer. He sings, he acts, he entertains. JT is just a kind of guy that everyone seems to like. It's pretty difficult to not like him, after all. What's there not to like about him? Sex appeal + intellect + fame/fortune + personality. I'm not discrediting his music or the wonderful way his album was promoted, but his fame is basically based off of the fact that he's JT. And JT is a pretty amazing guy. Plus, one station even plays the Acoustic version. They also won't stop playing 22. AND, just hear #thatPower on the radio tonight. Oh lord, no.
