US Charts Discussion (Gaga single tracking: August)

Problem I have is the Hot 100 should be based on what song is the most popular... Not what is getting the most attention. There's a difference. There are scenarios when videos get lots of attention because people are curious. It does not mean they like the song.

See this is what I was trying to say. HS isn't the most popular song right now, it's just getting a lot of attention because it's new.

Which brings me to another point: I don't believe parodies should be included in the formula. A music chart is supposed to tell you what music is popular. Popular Youtube trends such as the HS don't belong on a music chart. There's a youtube chart for that.

After all, isn't the Billboard chart supposed to inform DJ's and other music professionals about what is popular within the music community. People don't want to listen to HS on the radio, and most people don't plan on buying HS, so why should this song be represented on a music chart?

Keep this songs massive success (which I'm not denying at all) on Youtube please, and off of professional databases.

I wasn't referring to Harlem Shake when I originally posted that, but I've changed my mind after seeing how big an impact YouTube views had on it's charting. Basically the only valuable charts right now are the Digital Sales and Billboard 200 charts. Everything else is skewed in a way to not reflect what really IS popular.

Robotboy

i don't see the point in complaining. and gaga will have secured number ones from now on. ^^ this is great for gaga.

but the thing i don't get is that rihanna and biebers labels obviously have paid for youtube views. such a mess, but i don't care as much as all you do :ohwell:

Remember that you are unique. Like everyone else.

Parodies being included is the biggest problem I have with this. The Hot 100 chart has become such a joke.

If they can pay for youtube views, I'm sure they can cheat on Spotify too.

On youtube though, is is tricky deciding whether people are watching the viral video for the song, of whether the music is incidental.

Her is a 34 second Taylor video snippit with goat noises. Is it a remix now?

The goat certainly makes the song more country!

Some more info via Billboard's editor Bill Werde and director of charts Silvio Pietroluongo

@bwerde you guys are giving these #1's away too easily with these youtube views

Response: Baauer had a singular phenomenal week. Record-breaking at YouTube. Won't happen often.

@Bwerde Does the new Billboard Hot 100 rule include live performances on YouTube as well

Response: it would if they generated enough plays

@Bwerde What's considered "enough" plays?

Response: more than anyone else?

@bwerde literally every single Bieber song is going to go #1 from now on

Response: if his song gets played enough it's deserved.

@bwerde Wait! I have the ultimate question. If I covered pop songs on trombone and they blow up on YT, can I chart on the Hot 100? haha

Response: yes. Good luck getting to 20 million views tho.

@bwerde what will you guys do with bots? It's so easy to get 1K views with different IP addresses...

Response: YouTube de-spams and we all watch for data irregularities on all of our data feeds.

@silpiet Are you including parody views in this?

Response: As long as actual audio of a song is used in the clip, yes.

Bill also adds: "The new #Hot100 has a target chart ratio of sales (35-45%), airplay (30-40%) and streaming (20-30%). These change based on platform volume."

So in other words: "The new #Hot100 consists of sales, airplay, and streaming, and we change the percentage of each whenever the **** we feel like it."

Okay Billboard.

When I thought Romanian Top 100 is the worst chart ever there appeared Billboard :smh: At least our chart is only based on AI (which is a bad thing, but compared to BB rn it's better tbh).

But people don't watch Harlem Shake parody videos to listen to the song, surely that can't be considered a reflection on the popularity of it?

This. It's all ****ed up. The meme and parodies are popular, not the song.

I mean my friends and I were watching some of them the other day for a laugh, not to jam to the song. In fact, no one actually mentioned the song.
