Oof, I feel bad for the up-and-coming performers -- lots of small names get exposure if they manage to snag a SXSW spot. It's a breakthrough moment for some people. Rough for everyone who made travel plans too, of course.

Best wishes for everyone's health.  Take care. My state identified its first positive cases today.

I feel bad for all of the performers and workers whose livelihood largely is dependent on this festival, but at the same time, I think it's the right decision, as hard as it must've been to make.

Lots of conferences and conventions are being cancelled. I expect concerts will be next.

I understand the reasons, but man those bands and artists and vendors must be so disappointed :cryga:

It is the best for everyone.

It is still economically devastating.
It would have pumped about $356 million into the local economy.

I fear Coachella is next.

I’m worried that Coachella may be cancelled. But I did receive my wristband today, so I’m hoping that’s a good sign

I’m trying to keep as level headed as possible but today I read someone gave it to their dog

I didn’t leave my house today

And nothing of value was lost.  :reductive:

Excuse U?! :diane:  A lot was lost actually, especially for the locals.

So many regular, working people organize their whole year around this one week and depend on it for a large proportion of their incomes. SXSW basically was their income of the year.

musicians
bartenders
riggers
janitors
concierges
lyft drivers
lighting techs
chefs
contractors
security
public relations reps
street teams
city employees
parking garage attendants
non profits

Not to mention indie directors who waited to show their movies in this annual event.

So art was lost too. :diane:

The panic with this virus vs what it does makes no sense. I feel like the government isn’t telling us something. Because from what we know covid-19 is significantly less dangerous than any common virus that goes around. I wonder if there’s something they know that we don’t? I wonder if it causes more extreme issues that they aren’t making the public aware of. Or also mass hysteria/mob mentality. That’s also very likely. Or maybe I’m just dumb! But it seems like, if you get it, it’s very very unlikely you’ll die. It causes flu like symptoms... that’s about it from what they’re telling us. The death rate is practically nothing. It’s about 3000 people worldwide. China is so incredibly densely populated and yet ONLY 3000? What am I missing. Is everyone just bored and waiting for something to get worked up over?

My mom works at the University of MN and they’re talking about shutting campus down. There hasn’t been a single confirmed case in our state :enigma:
