ReidOne 12,427
I've noticed that the primary conflict in the Stupid Love video occurs between the red and blue tribes. I can't help but think this is symbolism for the American political parties, which are often associated with these same colors (Republicans are red, Democrats are blue). When you watch the video through this lens, it takes on a whole new meaning. "The world rots in conflict." Tribes battle for dominance, etc... Even the editing of the video seems to mimic that of a 24-hour cable news channel at times, with the logos constantly rotating in the lower right corner as if for a TV channel and the occasional "talking head" inset videos popping up (literally with the lyrics "LOOK AT ME!") ... it's as if she is saying everyone is acting out all this aggression as a cry for love ("all I ever wanted was love"). We are all watching the world crumble amid our political divisiveness (which is worse than ever before) and Gaga is here to reunite everyone with love and kindness. The timing of the release would also seem to complement this theory... right in the middle of another American presidential election cycle. I guess the takeaway here is that this video isn't simply some fantasy world she's made, but it's symbolism for the actual world we live in today. funkyhaus 7,697
I literally thought the same thing with the red (republicans) and blue (democrats) but didn’t know how to make a thread about it

JazzGa 14,621
Did you see the behind-the-scenes video from Nicola talking about the inspiration for the tribes? You are right on the nose, good job! Nicola said the blue tribe represents the "protestors" and the red tribe represents "authority." That also fits in pretty nicely with liberals vs. conservatives, blue vs. red, etc. And I agree that "Political parties should stop fighting and just hold hands! #LoveWins" is a lame message So hopefully they don't laser in on that too much. Lord Temptation 11,209
Totally man. It’s kind of an anti-war dance song. Subversive kween
magicalgaga 783
This is kind of obvious when you take into consideration the interview Gaga gave couple of days ago. The new album and SL with it are about acceptance, uniting as a whole and finding peace within yourself and others. i was born this way, baby

But isn't the general thought of people trying to understand each other in spite of different viewpoints and opinions the more important thing? It can sound naive, yes, but the act of trying to understand is what makes living easier. You don't have to accept everything somebody else thinks or says, but trying to understand them and why they think like that is what makes the difference. i was born this way, baby

I don’t think that’s all she is saying. Her message is a little deeper than that. She said in that Zane Low interview that she understands how it takes bravery to love, which is something we all have in common. She’s talking about a paradox of human nature - that we all seem to fight for the things we love. Stupid love is what makes us fight. It’s kind of cool, but tragic at the same time. We are so willing to go to war in order to have peace.

I totally agree. The message needs nuance in order to ring true. It's gotta be deeper than Blue Guys vs. Red Guys or "Just stop fighting and hug!" If we get more Chromatica world videos I hope they explore that a little bit more. @Lord Temptation I especially like what you said about the paradox of "fighting for love" Makes me think of the Manifesto of Mother Monster "How can I protect something so perfect without evil?" Wow I totally forgot about that. She has such a remarkable way of connecting things, maybe some of which may even be subconsciously. SL and Chromatica so far definitely evoke the spirit of Born This Way and the energy of ARTPOP.
Quartz 12,535
How is the message of kindness and acceptance 'lame'? Wow, how edgy of you to exclude others because I'm sure you haven't experienced being excluded yourself before. The point is, even when we have different individual colors, we should find a balance and coexist with each other. The gays don't have more of a claim of the land as the religious. The traditional don't have more of a claim to the world than the liberals. That's the point. We are all equal and we are all on this earth. So it's either we form tribes and kill the other off, or we share like mature people. The high road is hard to do. That doesn't make it lame. What's lame is being xenophobic and not being open to conversation and forgiveness. Talk with people who hurt you. You'll find you have more in common with them than you think. Inside, we are really made the same. 🕊
