She always say “we” as a collective. She wouldn’t have “won” without her fans. So in turn because of our hard work - her hard work paid off.

In Gaga's early days, specifically in The Fame era, she often says that she wants the stan culture to be back. She thought that the "superfan" has been lost, and it's her mission to bring it back. Stanning and becoming a superfan is an investment, financially and emotionally. In psychology, we have this thing called positive projection, where a person counts themselves as belonging to another person or group, and they get so invested in it that whatever that person or group accomplishes (or fails to achieve) they get it too. It happens all the time: when a family member gets into a prestigious university, or when your country's team wins a competition, or when a fellow fan gets onstage with your idol. It's a natural part of being social creatures as humans are.

This is such an interesting point. The positive projection element is one to think about, definitely, and I can totally see how stan culture brings a sense of belonging. I think it’s a concern only when it’s to the detriment of someone’s own wellbeing and they’re caring more about how their idol is doing than they are about making a happy life for themselves.

Of course! But I don’t have an issue with happiness at all. If you notice I said I’m happy it’s a success...

But that is different from thinking its an extension of YOUR life...LG topping charts should not be a personality trait.

I feel like some fans treat singers like they do sports teams and the charts/reviews like a game (I don't agree with how they approach it, but I see how it happens)...others tend to project their own, sometimes very intense, feelings about life in general on Gaga instead of just viewing her as an interesting artist/something they admire or like. What I've never been able to understand is the "your fave could never/stan war sh*t"...it takes the sports like fandom way too far...and it's almost always pitting women against women (internalized misogyny or just regular old misogyny).

The phrase "we did it kids" irritates me the most. Because fans throw it around when Gaga has achieved something and the fanbase has done nothing but sit on our asses and complain.

She did it, kids.

Not obsessed or anything.

If SL don't do well commercially?  I am still happy we got a fun song and video.

If it does? Even happiER.

But I think it will make me happy because I know there are many people who share the same love on SL rather than the bling.

Don’t be mean! Everyone was respectful in this thread and we have a very nice exchange of ideas.

A couple more takes that I don’t think have been said here yet—

“We did it” gives a sense of community and connection to other people. A lot of people don’t have good relationships with their friends or family, so ~stan culture~ or whatever gives them a connection to a community of people where they might actually feel like they belong

This one is more personal and might sound weird, but I have this thing about watching people achieve their goals/dreams. Maybe because I never had the balls to go after my own and now I feel too old to change careers. Living vicariously not in a weird toxic way, but because it’s something I’ll never actually experience first hand

You should chase your dreams. Everyone should. I believe in you.

I know it might sound cheesy but I've been very very depressed these past weeks and having a rough time in general and being able to share this experience with other people was the only spark of joy that I had. I felt like a careless teen again lol. Stan culture can be toxic but you never know what people are going through and this could be the only thing that makes them happy for a minute.

In certain respects, not all, the fans do have an impact on "some" success. There's literally a user on here who is averaging 18,000 streams for Stupid Love.

That doesn't mean that they alone change everything. Certainly didn't change Enigma.

But they have some sort of impact. In success not necessarily creative aspects.

I think that is great!! Truly - I am all for finding happiness wherever you can get it. Life is hard AF.

What worries me is the other side of the coin when being a fan brings upon the depression and the unhappiness.

I hope you feel better ❤️
