The EP/ album was released 10 months after Lana's official debut album Born To Die, in November 2012, and represents a follow-up to it both thematically and musically. It characteristically to Lana combines trip hop, indie, pop, soul, rock, sadcore and baroque pop music and contains many references to previous decades in America's history, as well as some fan-favorites and well known singles of hers. The album was appreciated by critics, with some calling it considered and richly teased out, or a very strong, successful record, whether taken as an addition or a follow-up.
