JustJames 968
We should all be VERY excited for the next single and rest of the album; Stupid Love was such a massive step forward for Gaga and her committment to being a pop music superstar. To the comments about her music/viuals/dancing not evolving, there is always going to be room to be BETTER when you look at all of the aspects of SL - the song - and MV. But, we need to realize what she just did with Stupid Love. Lady. Effing. Gaga... just released a lead single, a song that leaked in full 3 weeks ago, with an accompanying Music Video simulataneously at 12am EST Thursday, after two teaser videos nearly reached, or surpassed, 1m views on Instagram. The single and MV were promoted via billboards, sponsorships, digital commercials, and sold in cassette, CD, and digital download bundles. The song was on every major playlist on Spotify, and has now received near-unanimous acclaim/positive reception from radio, critics, and fans/stans, had her as the highest female on Apple Music, and reached #6 WW/#2 US with ~6M streams on Spotify. This is a HUGE evolution and a positive sign that she is here to solidify her legacy now. She is projecting confidence instead of panic, and the reactions of people to the song and visuals shows what an impact her career has had. 1. Stupid Love is her first mainstream pop song release since Applause in 2013; when that leaked, she issued a Pop 9-1-1 and ushered in her most negatively received era. This time, she sat on SL. You decide which approach worked. 2. Stupid Love is the first (?) time she has ever dropped a song and MV simultaneously at the perfect time for ultimate impact. BTW era had controversy and scrapped concepts; ARTPOP had 2 MVs total, 1 rushed, 1 cancelled, and 1 that had no real impact due to the era being long-gone. Joanne had several MVs, but only 2 singles, and the 2nd single's MV was a disaster. 3. Stupid Love has choreography in its MV for the first time since G.U.Y. Its visuals and theme tie to the overall concept of the album. This is so great. She didn't panic, she didn't change plans, she didn't scrap anything. She went 100% and dominated for 24+ hours and is going to end up with a Top 3 single to add onto her setlist and greatest hits. This is ABSOLUTELY her Just Dance of LG6. I have absolutely no doubt the plan was always to just get everyone on-board with a perfect lead before releasing more experimental/conceptual/versatile tracks. JustJames 968
I think we need to look at Physical vs. DSN (Dua Lipa) to see that Single #2 should come out in late April at the earliest in promo with the album. I prefer later but think that isn't likely given Enigma dates, right? I think the closest song from her past that I'd like to see the 2nd single compare to is Edge of Glory. It was inspired songwriting, mixed rock and pop and jazz, was upbeat yet introspective, fast-paced yet let her vocals shine through. I think she has moved past having to strip her music down to the point of a ballad to show the GP that she can sing (i.e., MR) and a pure ballad after Shallow's success would be regression. She needs something lyrically deeper than SL, that is more than 'dancepop' in its sound, etc. The '6 Feet Under' type of song that another user alluded to seems like it could be the perfect mix: deeper songwriting, mix of tempos, allowance for vocal power with strong production, opportunity to incorporate other genres of music... Million Reasons was not, IMO, close to her strongest songwriting by the way. As mentioned, its lyrics are incredibly redundant, and she does nothing with her vocals that we didn't know she could. She doesn't incorporate new instruments or sounds or do anything but what she has since she debuted - sing on a piano. What it was, however, was a great vehicle for the GP to consume at the time of her rebranding since her better-written ballads were always deep cuts. Speechless is incredible for being written and performed 7ish years prior; the lyrics are much more intricate, the vocal performance is raw and powerful, and it is much more pop vs. adult-contemporary. A shame they didn't think it could serve as a single.. but glad she was able to give such iconic performances of it.
