Bernie Sanders scored an easy win in the Nevada caucuses Saturday, giving him momentum going into California’s Super Tuesday primary and putting him potentially on a path to the Democratic presidential nomination. Sanders held a lead of roughly 2-1 in the popular vote in Nevada over former Vice President Joe Biden, in second place, with former South Bend, Ind., Mayor Pete Buttigieg in third as the caucus results were slowly tabulated. Sanders was supported by a broad coalition of voters in the most racially and ethnically diverse state of the three that have voted. The Vermont senator was backed by 53% of Latinos, who make up roughly a third of Nevada’s population, NBC News entrance polls indicated. The network’s surveys showed him running second among African Americans to Biden and leading among whites, young voters and even moderates. “He’s got so much momentum in California — you see how many people of color he is organizing here,” said Aimee Allison, an Oakland activist and founder of She the People, which focuses on issues affecting women of color. “His campaign learned a lot of lessons from (his run in) 2016, and they invested a lot in California this time. A lot of the other campaigns will be hard-pressed to catch up.” Speaking at a rally in San Antonio, Sanders said his campaign has “put together a multigenerational, multiracial coalition that is not just going to win in Nevada but sweep this country.”" Bernie won Nevada in a landslide earlier today, taking 46.6% of the vote, making him the first presidential candidate in US history to win the popular vote in the first 3 states of the primaries. I was actually there at his San Antonio rally tonight (my first political rally too btw) and it was phenomenal. The place was packed, one of the speakers (a member of his campaign) claimed that they had over 5,000 people in the venue (impressive considering the rally was announced 3 days ago and the venue wasnt that big either) and they had CNN playing on the large screens. The crowd erupted in cheers as CNN called Bernie as the winner in Nevada just a few minutes before he took the stage. Once he got on stage the energy in the room was even better as he used his victory speech to talk about the importance of unity and how important it is to bring the country forward before he made everyone in the venue lock arms for a moment. The entire speech was moving and may have brought a tear to my eye. The only negative takeaway to the entire experience were the Trump supporters protesting, there was a group going around whispering "latinos for Trump" in people's ears before they started waving white power signs in the air and yelling "look at all these n*****s in here". Thankfully everyone remained calm and people surrounded them to contain them and pointed fingers at them so security could come and remove them without incident. And while we were leaving and were stuck in traffic trying to get out the parking lot, there was a group of more Trump protesters screaming obscenities at us butt it was easy to ignore them once we rolled our windows back up. Overall a really positive experience and I was impressed at how much of a diverse crowd of people there. A very even mix of ethnicities and generations (I saw as many older people in there as I saw younger).
