You and your friends are very lucky then. Politics is an everyday struggle for many people. It decides whether or not they get to keep their land, drink clean water, get to enter a country, live in said country, marry someone, earn a minimum wage, fight a court case, have shelter, but good, get an education, healthcare or any other basic human need that the majority of us simply take for granted.

When you say “I don’t talk politics”, what you’re really saying is, “the struggle of others in this current political state has zero effect on me.”, therefore meaning you’re privileged enough to exist.

I’m not trying to bash you in anyway. I’m just trying to state why not talking about politics with your friends does more harm than good.

you're naive to think that talking is going to change anyone's mind. the thing you need to learn is that when people want to talk politics, they don't want to learn. they want to argue. or they want to hear their own ideas that they already love reiterated by another person. i defy you to tell me what good you have done talking with your friends about politics. :triggered:

From what I've seen quite a lot of liberals aren't open to anyones opinions unless it fits theirs and can become quite nasty if someone genuinely believes in something else.

Of course the same can be said for those who are conservative but from what I've seen (and based on this poll) they're more open to other people ideas and philosophies and don't demonize someone for their beliefs.

Friendship is about being open and accepting of people for their differences and about growing and learning together.

There are good and bad people on both sides. I believe that if someone refuses to be friends  just because of their difference of political beliefs then you probably shouldn't want that person as a friend.

Conservatives are alot more liberal and tend to be more moderate than most people here would like to believe. The truth is most conservatives believe in LGBTQ rights, women's rights and the rights of POC. Most conservatives tend to vote conservative based on the economy and government spending.

Most people here paint conservative as hard right, but these same people here paint moderate Democrats as hard right too.:ladyhaha: They live in an echo chamber. Sad really.  The hard left just like the hard right believe everyone is the "enemy."

The Democratic party has no values other than the claim that they are the "better of two evils". And you still vote for it anyways because you identify as a Democrat. And did you seriously describe the Democratic party as Basic Human Rights for all?!

I don’t know where you’re getting this information that I’m a democrat, because I’m far from one. But this comment just proves that you’re creating assumptions before you type. I recently just voted for the Solidarity party here in Ireland, because they are ones who fall in line with my values.

I’m a socialist. Would even call myself a communist tbh. I believe all humans should have access to healthcare, housing, food and education; literally just your basic human welfare.

Coming from a very conservative background, I’ve changed my family to accept LGBT people (as me coming out as a teen was a shock to them)

I changed their mind about immigrants, as I showed them the benefits of bringing educated people from outside the country into rural areas.

I’m sorry that’s how you feel about discussing politics. But the more we talk about it, the more these types of things are generally accepted as the norm.

Well I was specifically talking about the two political parties that exist today. Me assuming you were a Democrat is not a big deal and invalid to our argument.

I just dont think we should shame people who dont like getting into the toxic environment of politics. Specially not today, not everyone can handle that. I think the person you replied to was trying to make the point that most people dont really care about politics, they just want to fight.

But I agree that talking politics is important, I just dont think people are honest and its becoming more about joining the cult, rather the values.

I'm sorry but if someone has political views that violate general human rights in any sort of way I won't be friends with them.

This makes a lot of sense.

I think we can widely agree that issues of racism, sexism, and general bigotry are things that the left take a bit more seriously. The right does, but look at the number of people who would say they aren't racist but voted for Trump. To the right that says, "Well, I don't like him, but he did xyz for me." while to the left it says, "You are selfish and condone racism."

The former agrees that racism is bad, but doesn't take it as seriously as the latter which sees it as a line that can never be crossed or condoned. The former would absolutely be able to get on with the latter more than vice versa because they're a bit more flexible. Liberals being more rigid also makes sense when you consider that liberalism typically incorporates the greatest degree of diversity while conservatism tends to skew white.

honestly i can see why some people voted for trump. i am from a deeply working class family (aka poor) and when you're jobless and trying to get a job to make a buck to support your family and someone says they're gonna bring your job back from overseas, or reopen the mine where you once worked, you're gonna vote for that guy no matter what. and when people talk about race or whatever other disturbing thing trump does (of which there are many) and call everybody who voted for trump racist, i truly look at that as such an entitled point of view and coming from people who had their belly full the night before. and i also find it hypocritical how the left hates blanket terms but only when it applies to them. (and before anyone attacks me, i am politically on the far left, i am NOT conservative)

Times are changing. Liberals used to stand for different things, to be more open to ideas, to talk about issues. Now we have far left, who are as bad as far right. Yes, they have "better" ideas, but if you are not thinking as same as they are, they push you immediately into some corner and curse you.

I used to be left, now i find them all annoying and just don't care anymore. It's like, oh looks, a**holes on the right, and a**holes on the left... so much fun!

Eh I don’t see it as entitled, just different. Race doesn’t really impact whites people...who tend to vote more conservative. So it makes sense that it wouldn’t resonate as a pressing issue even if they think it’s bad (though tbf plenty participate in racist activities both overt and covert so it’s complicated).

Left folk also tend to be more urban...where there’s people of color lol so race *does* play a role in daily life and even if you’re white, you are more likely to know a POC and/or can see the racial or bigoted violence against a marginalized group. Some of the poorest areas in the country are in cities, mind you, and that is in large part because of racist politics.

It’s just different. The real crux of the problem is the perpetuation of an inequality gap that hurts everyone not super wealthy. For POC is exacerbates the problems of centuries of political mistreatment and violence and for poor white people it further stresses their basic livelihood. But what happens is that it brings out racial tensions so no one looks up and says, “these fat cats are the problem”. There’s infighting that keeps the elite sitting pretty.

Liberals do the exact same thing, you have an unrealistic cartoonish imaginary view of your political party.

What is “the exact same thing”? I mentioned a lot of things and wasn’t slamming conservative people in what I said. If you mean the first bit, it’s true. People who voted for Trump understand racism is a problem, but it’s not a concern of their’s like Midwest job creation is. Not saying he did that (because it’s fairly verifiable that he didn’t), but people vote for what concerns them most. That’s what I am saying.

if you meant the latter, conservatives *do* tend to be white...again, idk what’s confusing

Roughly 92 percent of conservatives said they would be friends with a liberal, and just 3 percent said that they would not have a liberal friend. Among liberals, however, almost a quarter said they would not have a conservative friend. Would UNC be a better place without conservatives? About 22 percent of liberals said yes. Would it be a better place without liberals? Almost 15 percent of conservatives thought so.

We been knew! The manager of the place I work, the MANAGER, would refuse to serve customers if she found out they were from "red states" and weren't obviously liberals.

You should not be friends with people who hate Jews, gays, and blacks. But thats not what the majority of conservatives believe! The idea that all conservatives are this way so I cant be friends with them is the problem. Yes racism is a bigger problem with conservatives but thats not who they are. You can find millions of conservatives who are good people everywhere, why not accept them as friends?

I do. I have friends who are conservatives. I wasn't talking about them. There are too many, though, who now support or excuse such views.
