Queen Bitch 10,513
Scandinavian Airlines has released a new commercial called "What is truly Scandinavian?" which has caused a shitstorm. The message of the video is quite clear: Scandinavian culture doesn't exist, everything is stolen from other countries. The video has divided people. With people on one side proclaiming that it's nothing but "woke globalist propaganda" and "promotion of oikophobia", and people on the other side claiming that the only ones who see a problem with the commercial are rightwingers, nationalists and closeted fascists. One moment in particular in the commercial, which people have ridiculed online, is the moment when a black man says "we are no better than OUR viking ancestors". The video has been compared to the controversial Gillette commercial from last year, about toxic masculinity. As of now the video has over 58.000 downvotes on YouTube and only a little under 4.000 upvotes. Scandinavian Airlines, or SAS, has claimed that they fully stand behind the message, and all the downvotes and hateful comments are the result of a coordanited cyberattack from right-wingers. SAS has gone on to disable the comments from the video, and has also uploaded a new 45 seconds version, where they among other things, has cut out the "black viking". OMonster 15,025
I mean, it's fact that, of course, all cultures are formed on the backs of others - but to frame an entire promotion around a country lacking its own sense of ownership or being is, frankly, pretty ridiculous. Way to completely miss the mark and irritate your core audience. Most people are patriotic and feel pride over where they come from. And since adverts like these are supposed to appeal to the majority view... it does feel like a bit of misplaced globalism imo. It's not an advert for the UN. It's an advert for a Scandinavian company that, pretty much, says Scandinavia is nothing. I understand its meaning (and its factuality) but from the perspective of marketing, it's obviously pretty flawed. subtext / fantasy
S0436 10,215
I think people would prefer to see the seats, in flight entertainment, meals etc isn’t it supposed to be advert for an airline?
Red 99,106
Another case of a interesting concept with a questionable execution If you see me posting like crazy, I'm either bored or procrastinating.
Ally Campana 15,284
I mean they didn’t lie. All cultures are created based on one thing or another. But it wasn’t necessary to put it in an ad for an Airline. Does it matter? Damage is done

They always do these types of "inspiring" commercials. Most of them are actually good and some even quite touching They did one where they listed reasons to travel the world and what you could gain from travelling and I ended up with tears in my eyes when watching it
Guest
What’s the point with the video? Scandinavian has a wide line of culture, but I mean it seems like they cut off everything of that except meatballs so it could look like we stand with absolutely nothing. Even better with our companies, tell me, what would the world be without IKEA, Spotify & H&M -Absolutely Nothing according to them
corvus albus 38,031
Did some people only watch half of the video? The most important sentence here was that it was unique to scandinavians to travel around the world, learn more about other cultures, take what they'd like to implement into their homes and refine it one the way. They linked all of these "scandinavian" treats to travel which they think is the actual unique scandinavian culture. I really like that.
Serial Chiller 8,044
lmao are we watching the same ad? Their message is clear as day: travel- because you can learn more about the things around you and expand your world, by bringing bits of culture back home from far and away and grow them in your soil. Typical case of insecure nationalists subconsciously projecting their embarrassment of their invading and marauding ancestors.
Bonkers 30,860
I think it's a beautiful commercial. The message is: get over yourself, your value does not come from your culture. You don't get to take credit for things you didn't do. It's really an argument against white nationalism and a call to appreciate what we inherit without feeling like we need to "own" it. Like, stop worrying about being better than others and enjoy your life.
