This duo has become an inseparable part of our collective childhood memory and the appeal of this show, created 80 years ago, has not for a moment faded away. In 1940, the first episode of Tom and Jerry aired, leading to 161 theatrical short films and a number of films and television shows. William Hannah and Joseph Barbera created this American franchise, and the series first appeared in the Metro Goldwyn Mayer (MGM) cartoon, Puss Gets the Boot. The series revolves around a comical love-hate relationship between a house cat and a mouse, who are often at each other's throats, causing much mischief and drawing much laughter. There are a few brief moments when the two manage to reconcile and demonstrate genuine acts of compassion as well. British military members were referred to as Tommy's, and German military members were referred to as Jerry's.
