Didn't see a thread made for this so here we are!

On Saturday 8th February, the people of the Republic of Ireland went to the polls to cast their votes to elect a new Prime Minister of Ireland. Counting started today (9th February) and the results are coming in.

Already we have seen a seismic change in Ireland. The current Prime Minister, Leo Varadkar, has LOST his seat to the Sinn Fein candidate, Paul Donnelly.

The exit polls put the 3 main parties neck and neck... however, recent polls since the results have been coming out now put Sinn Fein in the lead with 24%.

Its still early days and the votes are still being counted... but as of right now, out of 160 seats... 16 have been declared. 14 to Sinn Fein, 1 to the Greens and 1 to Fine Fáil.

This is gonna be an interesting election for sure :bradley:   could we see a reunited Ireland in the near future?

 UPDATE:

Sinn Féin have won the Irish election! They won't have a majority though

There is definitely a seismic shift in politics in Ireland for sure... in the UK GE last year, we saw a record number of nationalist MPs get elected in Northen Ireland... and now we have Sinn Féin with MASSIVE gains in the Irish election :bradley:  I don't think its too unrealistic to think we could have a reunited Ireland within this decade... ESPECIALLY when the EU have said that a reunited Ireland would be totally accepted in the EU.

Its pretty remarkable whats happening, and interms of the British Union, this election result could mean a lot for its future.

I think the Irish election system is a bit too complex for me :laughga: what are the chances of a left-wing majority without FF/FG? And just how left-wing is SF? Comparable to Bernie Sanders? Or more to the left, like Jeremy Corbyn?

I don't think they are that far left, but I'm not 100 % sure

Me! So happy to see the country standing up to make a change. After decades of catastrophic leadership, I hope whatever government we get from this can make a positive difference.

No :poot: I studied there for 2 years. No matter how many countries I've visited afterwards, Ireland is still my favourite country

Edit: I meant I'm not irish
