It's fine if you want to listen to their old music, before they did their crime or whatever the problem was. You've already given them the money, no further money is taken away by listening to an old CD or download and they won't even know you're doing it. But supporting new music is not ok. Unfortunately, even watching a video on YouTube now is enough to get the artist money, so it's very difficult to listen to something without giving anyone money. I'd be tempted to listen once and then never again. Listening to a song on YouTube is the very least you could possibly do and get away with, as long as you're not downloading or streaming, same for their albums. Not going to their concerts is a major factor as that's where the real money lies these days. Buying merchandise is also out.

Of course you can separate the artist from the music but when the artist has done unspeakably bad things, there should be no going back. We'd never accept it from regular civilians and go on supporting them. It's high time we stopped giving celebrities free passes. I think some bad people become famous just so this very thing can happen and they can get away with it.

As long as you download illegally, idc :gaycat:

Agreed with @StrawberryBlond about this. It's easier to think that celebs are always out of reach and that therefore it doesn't matter if you stream their song, but she's right, before you do, you should think: "is this someone I want to give money to". As you should with everything in life, as far as this is possible.

This is the reason I went vegan tooโ€”I was just done paying people to torture and kill sentient beings. I realized that I was fooling myself thinking "I'm not paying those people, I'm just buying this chicken 'cause I want chicken" and as soon as the actual truth and the corresponding logic kicked in (you can't separate a product from whoever produces it and/or profits from it), I never looked back.

Just like music, that decision was about food aka "entertainment"/leisure time, so it can be hard to force yourself to think about this stuff when you just want to relax and enjoy stuff but it's really just about caring enough about your moral stances and the consequences of your actions  It actually makes you feel better to act according to your beliefs because there's a consistency that arises, something you can take pride in.

That said, the number of artists I refuse to sponsor like this is extremely small. I'm not that judgmental I guess :toofunny:
