LGMonster95 13,704 Posted January 16, 2020 Share Posted January 16, 2020 It would look really cool to us but Imagine how terrifying it would be to live near that gigantic star knowing that it could explode at anytime (it could have exploded already). Luckily we live in a quiet place in space and from what I know, the closest star to us that has a chance to go supernova is like at 150 light years away and its moving away from us too (it is said that it would go supernova in like anywhere from now to 10 million years but the chances to do any demage here are very very low) Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

Goldilocks zones aren't just in solar systems it's a galactic thing too Between black holes, neutron stars and magnetars and just regions that are dense enough to be hit with radiation bursts or novas periodically it seems would have a hard time creating any life We are in an unusually calm and uneventful part of the Galaxy so we're fortunate Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

Yup can be anytime between now or 100,000 years But from my understanding from what I've been hearing, right now could be an inflection point cuz it's dimming so rapidly that it could mean it's literally about to go... But it could also just be star getting very irratic and unstable as it gets to the last phase of its life and it's brightness could fluctuate wildly (tho still dim in the longer term) in which case it could still be up to many milenia before it goes Nova We haven't had the opportunity to study many red giants this large about to go Nova and certainly not this close... We could potentially learn a lot of new things about the end cycle of super massive stars!!! Also is Betelgeuse massive enough to become a black hole? It probably is... I just thought of that Edit: Just searched it up. Apparently it is, as is the red giant Rigel. But there's no guarantee it will become a black hole, it merely has enough mass to potentially become one It depends how much mass the explosion blows away and how much remains at its core.
