Biden to Coal Miners: Learn to Code

Jill

Featured Posts

At a rally in Derry, New Hampshire on Monday, per the Washington Post’s Dave Weigel, Biden talked about how unemployed miners and coal workers who have lost their jobs in recent years can find “jobs of the future” if they “learn to program.” Referencing his role in a Barack Obama-era programming skills initiative in schools, Biden commented that “Anybody who can go down 3000 feet in a mine can sure as hell learn to program as well... Anybody who can throw coal into a furnace can learn how to program, for God’s sake!”.

Just so you all know: even if a run of the mill coal miner actually DECIDES to learn to code, even though he might be literally starving and may have an entire family to maintain, entry positions in tech require a whole lot  of programming knowledge. Like, you can't imagine how much.

Economy

Most communities with coal mines are small areas don't even have tech jobs

The idea that u can simply switch careers like nothing :toofunny:

Every democrat talks about transitioning coal mining communities into the newer, cleaner economy. For what it's worth, in the conversations I've had with Building Trades Union workers, they do NOT see "solar panel installer" as a just transition from fossil fuel jobs like oil/gas pipefitting, which require a high degree of training if you're participating in a certified apprenticeship program.

As usual, Biden could phrase things better. But he truly believes that there is a future for our nation's coal miners, and we all know that getting them there is an important and complicated policy challenge of the 21st century.

Iowa is 35 days away. This race is now a 2 way between Biden and Bernie. Throw your support behind Bernie to stop this mess from becoming the nominee. He will get steam rolled by Trump. Also before Liz fans come at me, I like her but shes back to polling at a solid 3rd, far from the top 3. It’s time to switch. As for Buttigieg fans, he can’t be the nominee with 0% african american support. Hes basically just running to be a spoiler in Iowa (a state thats 90% white)

It's worse if you take into account a possible Biden/some Republican ticket. That would be an easy win for Trump and I'm worried for the integrity of the Democratic party if that scenario ever happens.

Doubtful!  That hasn’t happened since Lincoln, with disastrous results after he was killed!  Smh

Biden himself said he would consider it so I don't think it is that doubtful.

:rip: Transitions are necessary, but its possible to make this message w.o sounding so tone deaf and using language that we literally know offends workers because we've used it in the past :deadbanana:

Just Joe being Joe!  That’s what people seem to like nowadays. Someone who “Tells It Like It Is”, plane and simple.  Look at who’s in the White House now....  🙄😒

He also said he couldn’t think of any republicans either when he said that. :fan:

His message is true. But the way he conveyed it is ****.

Soon AI will be doing these mining jobs. The U.S economy is becoming a knowledge economy. The demand is shifting towards more scientific jobs such as coding. So honestly if I'm young and still have the chance to learn something that can help me in the future, I'd do it.

And Biden just shot himself in the foot

Hillary ignored Bill when he said to win was to appeal to the Rust Belt

And the rust belt all flipped in favor for Trump

You don’t piss off Blue Collar workers. They literally are the backbone of society.
