Spotify will “pause” political ads in 2020

The move will apply to Spotify’s ad-supported service, as well as its podcasts, the company said on Friday. The music-streaming service never sold political ads in other countries, so the change only affects the U.S.

Spotify is describing the move as a “pause” and may resume the ads in the future.

“At this point in time, we do not yet have the necessary level of robustness in our processes, systems and tools to responsibly validate and review this content,” the Stockholm-based company said in a statement. “We will reassess this decision as we continue to evolve our capabilities.”

Tech companies have struggled with how to handle campaign commercials, especially as the U.S. presidential election nears. Twitter banned the ads in November, though it said some “cause-based” ads for some economic, environmental or social issues would be acceptable. Google also has restricted certain types of targeting for campaign ads.

Facebook, meanwhile, has continued to allow political advertising. The commercials aren’t fact-checked — a policy that’s drawn criticism from activists and some Democratic presidential candidates, including Senators Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders.

President Biden

I strongly disagree with this. All it will do is reduce name recognition of candidates and reduce voter turnout since it will decrease the outreach to young/diverse voters.

The extreme left’s ideas are going to end up getting this election handed to Trump. We need intense ads EVERYWHERE & we need all the money we can get from big donors in order to beat the political machine that has become Trumps fortune. All this does is disadvantage us. Stupid stupid stupid

Ending online political ads, refusing to take superdonors money, refusing to use political incorrectness language, their utter inability to fight back at Trump w anything but “hooray! New social program! More progressive ideas that will never be enacted and we’ll forget about tomorrow!!”

What kind of nonsense is this :rip:

You're basically saying that:

1) The CEOs of Twitter and Spotify the Far Left because they don't want to contribute to the political machine that helped get Trump elected like Facebook, which was widely compromised and is okay with being a willing actor in 2020 as well.

2) Refusing to take money from corrupting influences is a bad thing - we should just accept dark money and money in politics as part of how things should be if we want to win.

3) Offending entire groups of people is a viable political strategy for the Democratic Party in 2019 (re: "political incorrectness")

4) The left offering a new, positive vision for America doesn't count as "fighting back" against Trump.

fixed! :fan:

In all seriousness, I know that this is a thing, but I said "... is a viable political strategy for the Democratic Party in 2019" because while being politically incorrect is a charming trait for some Republicans and Independents, it does NOT play well with the Democratic Base/Electorate. Furthermore, the "far left" in discussion tends to be whatever group people even a step to the right want to call it, even though in regards to the actual political spectrum it refers specifically to Anarchists and Communists (and Socialists of some varieties). These aren't the "Social Justice Warrior, identity politics is God" people, that's mostly liberals and neoliberals, so the critique isn't even appropriate in the first place :emma:
