it's literally all fanservice and completely invalidates episodes 1-8 not to mention the retcon of the last jedi. if you're not a star wars fan you will probably like it.

I'm a huge Star Wars fan, and I loved it.

What annoys me about this conversation is that people keep saying, "Oh, it retconned TLJ! It was terrible!", but....isn't that we what wanted?? Look, I'm actually someone who enjoyed TLJ, but even I can admit it had some glaring flaws. If J.J. were to further expand upon Rian Johnson did, you'd probably get an EVEN MORE divisive movie than TLJ.

It was pretty much all fan service, but, to be honest, isn't that what we kind of want? After the mess and controversy that was TLJ, I'd be lying if at the end of the day I wouldn't just like a bit of fan service for both new and old fans. This is what this movie gave.

Is this movie perfect? Nope. To me, it still has some glaring issues, but given everything that's happened with this new trilogy, I think J.J. did the best he could.

it's also certified rotten :hor:

Well, TLJ has a 91% critic score, but also a 43% audience score :hor:

Even though I think websites like Rotten Tomatoes can be valuable, sometimes it can also be a pile of garbage

Can I ask how it invalidated all the other movies and how it was all fan service. I’m not asking this sarcastically or to drag anyone, but I seriously don’t understand how someone could see that spectacle of a movie and not enjoy it. Even though I’m not the biggest stan, I like to feel like I know the lore well enough so if something was off, I would notice something. I just really don’t get the hate and I feel like some are just hating just to hate.

the emperor returning invalidates anakins whole arc. he was supposedly the chosen one to bring balance to the force which he did by killing the emperor. the emperor supposedly never died now which is never explained. force healing is now apparently a thing. theres never any danger because rey is overpowered and no one dies. c3po memory wiped? they have a backup. chewie died? he was on another ship. every powerful force user supposedly always needs some famous lineage now (rey being a nobody completely retconned). kylo the last skywalker dies and the blood of palpatine lives on. i could go on and on...

no, a lot of people loved tlj me included. it's a very good film made by a very talented filmmaker. which is why it's 91% on rt. it actually took risks instead of completely pandering. the hatred comes from the very vocal ones and half of them probably don't even know why. they tried to replicate luke and vader with rey and palpatine and they completely miss the point. her being a nobody was the hardest thing for her to find out which is the same reason vader being lukes father was so shocking. this film was written by people with absolutely no idea of what makes star wars great.

I’m not a Star Wars fan at ALL but when I was dragged along to see this film on Christmas Eve I was SHOOK. I was literally crying, laughing, and my jaw dropped multiple times. It was so beautiful and it’s what you go to the cinema for, exciting experiences like that. I thought it was better than end game.

It definitely made me a Star Wars fan, I’m starting to watch the films from the beginning now.

Also I guess a critique is that I wish Rose was in it more, they built her and hyped her up so much in The Last Jedi, it was a bit upsetting that she got the shaft in this one.

It's bad. The worst part is how it literally invalidates the entirety of Last Jedi. It's like the he took every single think from that movie and turned it uspside down

-Rey being a nobody, woops she's evil grandaughter!

-Finn , Rose and Poe have some of the most boring subplots. They are not important at all!

-No explanation to how Palpatine just appears out of nowhere. Snoke is an unexplained clone I guess.

-Is basically Return of the Jedi 2.0 down to the secondary antagonist becoming good to save the main protagonist...

That was before Rotten Tomatoes locked audience score. TLJ shows scores from whoever wants to go and score it meanwhile the new movie needs you to be a US citizen + have verified movie tickets.

A lot of people loved TLJ, sure, but you can't say that this wasn't a film that was hated by a lot of the fans as well. Look, I enjoyed TLJ, I'm not a hater or anything. I thought it was a pretty good movie, that being said, you have to realize that it had some major issues and valid concerns from fans.

Rey being a "nobody" only emphasized that. I guess the idea of making her a mystery was cool, but then you also get fans complaining that she's just a "Mary Sue", and I would tend to agree with that. If you don't give her a backstory that connects to, at the very least, a powerful force user (ala Palpatine), then it wouldn't seem that her feats are warranted. Like, a random girl from a random planet with seemingly "no one" parents is able to tap into the force at such a level that Luke Skywalker  was like, "I've seen this power only once before, it didn't scare me then, but it does now"? That just doesn't make sense. Making her a decendent of Palpatine at least gives credence to the fact that she's such a powerful force weilder with seemingly little training.

Her being a "nobody" isn't shocking. It's disappointing. Again, this is coming from someone who actually liked TLJ. Rian Johnson tried to make some sort of philosophical statement about how "anyone could use the force" and how "anyone can become a Jedi", which I think is admirable, but the execution of that was way off.

Considering everything that's happened with this trilogy, J.J. did the best he could. Was he the best director for this trilogy? Probably not. But considering he did the TFA, it only made sense for him to come back and try and clean up what happened in TLJ. At least hopefully now we can get Star Wars content that's universally loved. That's why I think Disney should replace Kathleen Kennedy for Jon Favreau and/or Dave Filoni.
