the rule of thumb is that films clear production/marketing costs and start bringing in a profit once they gross double the budget. So Cats would have to gross $200M just to recoup the investment, and then whatever more for profits

I think it was actually pretty smart to open this weekend. Star Wars is such a male driven brand that there was a huge opening and opportunity for counter-programming it with something would attract female audiences, but yeah this wasn’t it  Cats is so hated, I don’t even know why Universal greenlit it in the first place

Wow, even lower than I thought. For an all-star cast, this is an unmitigated disaster. Funny thing is, an all-star cast can be the death knell of a film's commercial reception. Time and time again, starry cast lists have failed to get butts in seats. It's almost like the public know they're being brainwashed into seeing the movie because of the casting. I'm glad that the public stood by its initial perception that they weren't interested and no amount of positive promo changed that. It tried to be a bigger deal and make people believe it was going to be good but the public aren't having it. I don't know why some people thought that Taylor's presence would've saved it. She's not been in one well-received film so far, everything she's been in has either flopped (The Giver), been panned (Valentine's Day), been forgotten (The Lorax) or all three (this one).
