not Chromatica

Lemme tell you this: back in the day I was so hooked on Right Round and so intrigued by this Ke$ha figure, who I couldn't find any info on, that when Tik Tok came out it truly came as a revelation. Well, I doubt that her identity was concealed by the FBI or something – I'd say it was a case of poor googling skills. Anyways, Tik Tok was a heckin' bop on top of that and the rest is herstory.

ALGAYDO

It’s an absolute banger. Everyone either loved it or hated it, but either way nobody could escape this insanely catchy tune. Even the pretentious people claiming to hate it for being so shallow.mp3 were bopping to it :vegas:

It was relatable and quotable: "wake up in the morning..."

I’m picturing me in the backseat going “I’m talking pedicures on our toes, toes, tryin’ on all our clothes, clothes, boys blow in’ up our phones, phones” :laughga:

I think it’s funny how people love Tik Tok, the song with lots of auto tune and not the best vocals yet hate on any Madonna song in the last decade for the same reason they love Tik Tok :ladyhaha:

Here in Australia alot of radio callers were asking to request that “new Lady Gaga song with tik tok in it” because apparently many listeners thought it was a Gaga song :creepflop:

They could've played Bad Romance instead. Tik Tok blocked Bad Romance from going #1 in Australia and I'm still mad. :laughga:

I was thinking about Kesha's ridiculously fast rise to fame, and I began wondering - how did it happen?

Kesha didn't have a single song out in her name yet, no online fanbase (this was 2009, before social media was mainstream), and yet she managed to go #1 on her FIRST single. All the recent big artists - Lizzo, Post, Billie - all had been building fanbases online for a while before they hit it big.

How did Kesha get that visibility so fast?

Kesha was known as ke$ha on MySpace since 2007. She had even had an earlier version of the song "backstabber" off animal on an episode of The Hills in 2007. Which is when I had found her (back then MTV would display the artist and track title to songs playing on their shows) thus I found her on MySpace that day and followed her and downloaded the track through limewire. She also had several other tracks on her MySpace. Social media was already creating stars at that point mind you, both Panic! At the disco and gym class heroes got their popularity through MySpace. Much like the artists today that gain followings through YouTube or soundcloud. Throw in her connection to Dr. Luke, her penchant for catchy addictive hooks, and the persona pop driven excess of the gaga era and suddenly she finally had a window to breakout and succeed (theyd been looking for one since 2005) and she did.

Even jeffree star wouldn't have the following he has now had he not had his 00s fame through MySpace. Not sure if you're just very young or if you've forgotten, but social media has been a "thing" since the early 00s lol. It didn't just begin this decade when some of you came of age lol it's just...solidified as a concrete thing now I guess, don't really know how to phrase it.

True, back in the day it was WAY easier to become a famous singer… Nowadays half of the planet tries to be famous. I don't know how things happen "backstage".

Look at Billie. She made a record in her bedroom while being nobody and suddenly she became the biggest popstar of the year. I don't know how she got signed (no offense I love her) when so many people make music. I mean, what did she do to be noticed by Interscope? Once you sign, I guess it's pretty easy to get famous if you want, you just need to have a good strategy and catchy songs. But when you're alone in your room, what makes a record label pay attention to you? How does that happen? Did Billie contact record labels hoping to get noticed? Or did she just do her thing and got noticed without asking anyone?

Yeah they should have! I remember hearing the initial reaction to Bad Romance and it was very love-hate. Luckily it grew on people. I’m fuming too because it was the first of three Gagz songs to stall (Telephone hit #3 and Alejandro #2) :wtfga:

isn’t billie’s mom in the industry, though, which might have helped expedite the label discovery process? maybe tv/film (tbh, i’m no eilish scholar in the slightest, so most definitely correct any / all erroneous information) but established enough for billie not to emerge from complete obscurity … ?
