Nicola Sturgeon Demands Transfer of Power for IndyRef2

"Speaking as she released a paper called Scotland's Right to Choose, Ms Sturgeon said there should be a transfer of powers to hold another vote from Westminster to Holyrood - a so-called Section 30 order.

The Scottish National Party leader said she would be sending her paper and a letter by post to Mr Johnson setting out what she said is a clear democratic mandate for another vote in Scotland.

At last week's general election the SNP won 47 of the 59 Westminster seats in Scotland.

Ms Sturgeon said she will call on the UK parliament to transfer powers to hold a new independence referendum to the Scottish Parliament and will publish the draft legislation for it.

Admitting people ask her what she will do if Mr Johnson says no, she said she would consider all reasonable options and that "they should be under no illusion that this will be an end of the matter".

"It is for the prime minister to defend why he believes the UK is not a voluntary union of equal nations. It is for him to set out why he does not believe people in Scotland have the right to self-determination.

"And it is for the prime minister to explain why he believes it is acceptable to ignore election after election in Scotland and to over-ride a democratic mandate stronger than the one he claims for his Brexit deal."

The first minister said she would act "reasonably and in a considered manner" and she expected the same of the prime minister.

Mr Johnson is opposed to a second Scottish independence referendum.

Ms Sturgeon said she would push for a "legitimate" vote.

"The Scottish Government believes that right should be exercised free from the threat of legal challenge," she said.

"We understand that a referendum must be accepted as legitimate, here in Scotland and the UK, as well as in the EU and the wider international community."

The independence referendum in 2014 was, at the time, described by the then SNP leader Alex Salmond as a "once in a generation" vote.

But supporters of independence argue that the UK's decision to leave the European Union represents a "material change" in the relationship between Scotland and the UK.

Scotland voted to remain in the EU."

Watch the full speech below:

---------------

Just to explain the 'section 30'. Section 30 of the Scotland act is the transfer of power from Westminster to Holyrood  to accept the result of a future referendum. We don't need it to hold a referendum, but having the section 30 ensures that Westminster legally accepts the result of the referendum so it would be the easiest and the best option for both parties.

It is great that Nicola has finally sent the section 30 request. If Boris Johnson refuses, she can then take it to the courts... and it can go from there.

Its happening guys  :bradley:   We had a vote in 2014, it was not a "once in a generation vote" like what people said, and even then, there has been a significant change in circumstances as Scotland voted overwhelmingly to remain in the EU and we face being dragged out against our will. Its time that Scotland was free 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

I really hope Scotland get their 2nd referendum to stay or leave the UK.  But if they vote to stay in the UK then Sturgeon must resign and if they vote to leave the UK there must be a law that states they cannot return.

Well... has any country that left the UK returned? :poot:   I hope people see the sense and wake upto the fact that the UK is a sinking ship, and an independent Scotland is a lifeboat to rescue away from a Tory UK

The whole world is a sinking ship...Scotland is nothing special and separatism isn't a proportionate response to any problems the world is facing now...Nicole and all other separatist leaders need to put their self-interests aside and think of the bigger picture #wakeup

Nicola and the SNP aren't separatists. We want to open our doors, not close them. Brexit, which we did not vote for, is separatism at its finest. Why should Scotland just sit back and be used as a door mat? Why should Scotland be ruled by England? Independence is all about putting the power back into the hands of the Scottish people and be in amongst the other leaders on Europe and collaborate to tackle issues like climate change. We can't get on with everything that we need to because we do not control the full country.

The whole world is not sinking, and if you really have that view then its very pessimistic.

Omg I just looked it up and Scotland has just 5 milllion inhabitants while Holland has 18 million and is like 5 times smaller than Scotland. :koons:

Well I'm watching The Crown right now and Scottland really has an amazing landscape so I understand most of the country is just landscape.
