Oscars disqualify English Nigerian film

The Academy has disqualified a Nigerian film "Lionheart" which was predicted to *be strong competition*  :huntyga: in the Best Film in a Foreign Language Category. The film features a bit of Igbo which is a native language of Nigeria but is predominantly in English. English is the official language of Nigeria. It is Nigeria's first submission to the Oscars.

Does this mean Nigeria (and similar countries) can't submit to the oscars? What are your thoughts on this?

Is the Academy international or American exclusive? because this rule is dumb, that means that even movies from Australia, India, UK and many other countries can't be qualified :poot:

"Best International Feature Film" is the category lol it was disqualified because it had too much English

That's sad.. maybe they can (if not too late) be entered in English categories then?

I follow this category quite closely because I love foreign films and people do :bon:

just because you’re not interested, doesnt mean there arent people out there who are :ladyhaha:

I don't know I kind of think the rule is fair. Otherwise foreign films with English would have a huge advantage. Voters would understand it better and rely on subtitles less., thus making them more likely to win. If it was just for movie made in a foreign country then UK, Canada or Australia would win that category every year.

I follow this too, as the article says the frontrunners are Parasite,Pain and Glory” and Les Miserables. I was surprised to hear this “predicted winner” for the first time so I went through the wrap article word by word and found out you are the only one saying that. :lolga:

This is odd.

I mean, the category was literally called Best Foreign Language Film, which would make sense why it wouldn't qualify.

But they literally changed the category name a few months ago to Best International Feature Film, so if they didn't change the name for cases like this, then why did they change it?

Wait, so the foreign language category is replaces with international feature? Or they just added? Maybe there's a mix up?

Parasite is widely predicted to win, and tbh, will 99% win.

Which is what confuses me. Like this is making no sense to me and is a huge injustice to Nigeria and the director
