Britney is a 00s icon, not a legend. Beyoncé is definitely on the path of becoming a legend but I think she still needs a couple more impactful eras to fully become one. The most disrespected one is def Mariah.

Okay but why is Christina Aguilera not included in the poll:oprah: She definitely is a legend, even if it was for her voice alone. And she also gets a lot of undeserved hate for ‘screaming’, having gained weight and flopping on the charts recently.

Apart from her like others stated definitely Janet Jackson and Mariah Carey!

What you want Lady Gaga🥂 What you want with Christina🥂

Assuming that by disrespect, you mean to their work and not their persona, it's definitely Britney Spears by far

Amy Winehouse.

It’s indisputable she had compromises with her mental health, but much of the media was really relentless as she was fighting, definitely crossing a line for sales.

Britney and Michael

Michael: it's pretty self explanatory why he has been disrespected :(

Britney: people were literally excited to see each and every mistake she made in 2007/2008 and made jokes about her mental health (and still do now). People were counting down the days until she died and Obituaries were written by the media. She was absolutely hounded by the paparazzi and not given a break, there were countless videos of her crying asking them to leave her alone (even outside her own house where they shouldn't be). Even in her worst moments, in an ambulance on the 5150 hold paps were chasing her ambulance filming her and trying to get the 'best' photos. In 2007 she'd try and carry out her day to day life and she'd have people shout at her 'Get the f*** out of our neighbourhood we don't want you here'.

Spoiler

The amount of people and celebrities that made fun of Britney in 2007/2008 was disgusting. Britney even said a few years ago that she stayed in her house for 2 years (end of 2009/2010) so the paps would leave her alone. Even until this day people make fun of her and it looks like people won't leave her alone and will always hold that stigma against her as being 'crazy', despite how far she has come.  Let's not even get into how disrespectful her team are and her dad.

Also it's disgusting how people talk about her, saying she can't sing, is not talented, crazy, etc. I think people are extremely mean about Britney compared to all the other pop girls, it's just so sad as she is probably one of the nicest and most down to earth people there is. The girl could sing her heart out back in the day, but her record label wanted her to a big pop star, this is not the route britney originally wanted to go down. People try and discredit how much of a massive influence Britney has had in the Pop Industry, she is 20 + years into her career and has had a massive impact and has had many iconic moments that are still remembered until this day. People for some reason hate to give her credit.

There is honestly so much more I could say but i'll leave it at that. People think it's okay to joke about Britney and make fun of her life and I think that is so sad, she has been through so much and people continue to try and tear her down.

For anyone saying that Janet and Whitney should be on the list, I did consider them but I think, ultimately, they don't have the same list of criticisms that the others do, it's really just one or two things at most, so not bad enough to get into the most disrespected category. Nothing wrong with voting for them under "other," of course.

Hey is Beyoncé on that list?  She’s overrated IMO

Beyonce, Britney, and Kylie are not legends.

Perhaps the reason why you think they're not deserving to be recognised as legends is partly what makes them be disrespected legends? Debating their legacy is part of the disrespect. These women have been around for 20 years or so and are still talked about and successful to this day, with crazy influence. If that's not legendary, I don't know what is.

Madonna honestly. Not only because she’s been mistreated but also because she’s literally a trailblazer for female artists. Most women wouldn’t be able to do what they do if it wasn’t for Madonna. She opened the gate for female artists to express themselves whichever way they wanted. She walked so the rest could run.

Yet many don’t recognize the level of legendary she’s achieved and everything she’s changed about the music industry with her influence, and dismiss her as an old attention ***** who needs to retire smh. The level of disrespect is insane.

I've found the idea that Madonna is some sort of trailblazer for females is a bit overexaggerated. There were lots of strong females making waves before her, including women that she admits inspired her, like Chrissie Hynde and Debbie Harry. Without Cher, there could've been no Madonna. Cher was perhaps the first ever female singer to be remotely sexual, to have a sexual image. To act like Madonna was the first to start doing that stuff in the 80's and 90's is ludicrous. Madonna being a trendsetter is actually quite strange when you actually look at her discography and when it was released. Her 80's stuff sounded no different to what other 80's popstars did, she released an RnB album in 1994, when RnB and ballads were a huge thing. She hopped on the club/rave/dance trend of the 90's to make Ray Of Light. She made an urban infused album in 2008 (just as urban was about to die out for a while, ironically). Almost all her recent work is trying to hop on the current music trends, from getting Nicki Minaj on her songs to utilising dance beats to Latin sounds. When she was working on Rebel Heart in 2014, I remember she said when asked who she wanted to work with, she said Adele, Daft Punk and Lorde, aka, some of the biggest names of 2013 who she never mentioned again afterwards. Madonna has always jumped on trends, with the one big exception being her Confessions disco album.

Not to say she hasn't had influence and inspired many, of course she has, but it wasn't until I started listening to all her albums and paying attention to what trends were going around at the time that I realised she wasn't the revolutionary trendsetter I was led to believe she was.

Kylie is not a legend in America. SHe has a few hits, and that's it.

It's a poll for global members, so it's not just America this is based on. Kylie has been around for 30 years, had loads of hits in Oceania and Europe who consider her a legend and she's widely considered to be a gay icon.

I considered her but honestly, she just never rose to legend status in my mind. She's only really a legend to people who grew up in the 90's (I'm one of them and even I don't consider her a legend, more an icon). All of her 3 US #1's were on her debut album from 1999 and she was never a major top 40 artist, with every album selling worse than the last and she hasn't had a hit album since 2006 (which was only her third studio album). She doesn't have lots of memorable hits that the public can name off the top of their heads. She's like the Cyndi Lauper of her generation.

Also, you can only make 10 options in a poll and I've listed 9, so I couldn't put down everyone, so really wanted to stick to unquestionable legends.

I acknowledge and recognize most of these artists. I have another fresh in my mind. A producer, singer and songwriter that has collaborated frequently with another cult gay artist. They were disrespected by some very unkind people. Everyone has a right to their own privacy/safety. I am just happy that said artist is doing what they love still (allegedly).

Britney is highly disrespected and I am not sure if she will ever receive respect as a musician, even though as a child she had vocal chops. I just hope that one day people come to have sympathy for all that she has been through and how little control she has had over her own life.

Michael Jackson has lost pretty much all of the respect people had for him before Leaving Neverland. He used to be one of the most respected musicians but this year I feel like the public has cancelled him for real this time.

My old cat is a tough man, but i cant deny the way he bites my hand and he stabs me, he grabs me by my heart <3

Madonna’s first album was very different from other popular music from the year 1983. For one, it used cutting edge technology that had only been around for about a year or even less when the record was released (LinnDrum, Oberheim DMX, Moog Bass synthesizer, and Oberheim OB-X synthesizer), so most of the sounds you hear on her first record were not mainstream when she debuted. Physical Attraction, Lucky Star, Borderline, and Holiday were unique for their time, especially PA (the Moog bass would go on to become a trademark of hers throughout the ‘80s). Even Everybody, which had a Boogie sound that was fairly common in NYC, used the then-brand new LinnDrum, as both were commercially released in 1982. What also makes it different from other early-mid ‘80s pop records was that it was a proper dance album intended for the clubs, but just happened to be catchy (most of the songs are really long, anywhere from 4-6 minutes). It featured a style that was generally only common amongst underground NYC dance musicians (underground music was still melodic back in those days), and is a sound that no one has really bothered replicating since most went for the Cindy Lauper and Michael Jackson sound at the time and other dance styles such as Freestyle and Hip-Hop were coming out.

Her albums after her debut became progressively more mainstream and less edgy. Like A Virgin had some uniqueness to it, but the singles were super mainstream sounding. However, Love Don’t Live Here Anymore (a cover), Shoo-Bee-Doo, Pretender, and Stay featured a retro-inspired sound that was evocative of the 1960’s (The Shirelles, The Ronnettes, The Shangri-Las) while still sounding properly contemporary using then-new technology, unlike the 2000’s and 2010’s where people just copy the actual styles and sounds of previous decades when they want to evoke the feel of the music. True Blue is definitely her most ‘80s-sounding record. The only unique song off the album was La Isla Bonita. I’d say the Who’s That Girl? soundtrack was more individualistic than True Blue was, but only slightly. I should also mention that Into the Groove, which was a stand-alone single, sounded more like her first album than her second one even though LAV was already out by then.

Yeah, I've been hearing about how she was the first to utilise this sound and fine, but I have to say, that album is a shambles, I think it's her worst ever. I didn't say that at the beginning as I felt pressured to think that all her old work was superior but wow, that album was seriously bad, even for 1983 standards, surely? The only song I liked was Burning Up. I mean...I'm shocked that album even got made, it was so pure quality in every respect. I know, to many this will be seen as blasphemous but admit it, if this album was released today, people would laugh it out the door. It's a relic of its time and has aged terribly.

True Blue's my favourite album of hers, it's 80's-tastic in a good way, in a way that's quite timeless. And I also love Ray Of Light. Erotica and Bedtime Stories are also decent. I liked her I'm Breathless soundtrack too. But everything else was either ok, below average or downright terrible. Knowing how to market herself is what ensured that she stayed around because I feel a lot of other artists would have failed a lot earlier with the music she puts out.
