I don't think the auction has the right to do it though as this seems to be like stolen property. Legally i think they do. The dress was only taken from lost and found after a prologued period of time (even if the hotel should of done a better job of reaching out to owner) Ethically they dont... everyone knows who the dress belongs to and they should have the decency to return it. This is where the law and ethics dont always mesh.

gagasicebath 2,340
It really just sounds like a next level screw up. Gaga’s team: “Wait, did we never return the dress?!” Valentino’s team: “Wait, we never collected the dress?!” Gaga: “I mean, I’m pretty sure I took the dress off because I’m not still wearing it, so...”
NewYorkCity 10,536
This dress is on its way to become iconic and I am living. I hope this woman gets to auction it and collects that money. No one was giving a **** about the dress for almost a year until someone decided to make money out of it so this is a “FU rich people” situation for me. You look like a baby crying for a toy he wasn’t even using when another kid takes it.

She has no clue who you are, how could she possibly leave that dress to you? Anyway, arrest her, take the dress back & figure out who’s going to be taking the dress after shows from now on. Designers have people take the dress after shows all the time so I understand why Gaga thought to leave it there for Valentino. The thing I can’t wrap my head around is this maid actually believing in this “finders keepers” sh*t. Sorry but no, that’s not how the world works. Just because you found something doesn’t make it yours & because no one claimed it definitely doesn’t make it yours. How could they claim it if they never knew you had it? Ugh whatever. Haute Couture dresses such as this one have serial numbers sewn in. It’s not even the designer’s property (Pierpaolo Piccioli) but the property of the company that owns Valentino. Diamonds get engraved with serial numbers to catch thieves. So if Gaga ****ed up or Valentino ****ed up that’s on them. It’s mostly a “my people contacting your people” situation. Lacee’s Gaga’s personal assistant...oooh Lacee might be in trouble.
Ivy 12,593
It seems like if either side really cared to get the dress back it wouldn't have been that hard to find, so.. I say the maid keeps the dress! Also I would like to see how much it would sell for the meow in zombieboy

It was in Lost and Found for a LONG time and no one claimed it. It's not like the maid just jumped on it to snatch it. She has no reason to be arrested. Off topic, but no, that's not why they get numbers etched onto them. It's so they can be matched to their corresponding diamond grading report to prove they are the same diamond. The number appears in the official grading report as well. I know. I used to work at the GIA Gem Trade Laboratory as a diamond grader. Not all diamonds have numbers etched into them, though. The super valuable ones always will. But, it's not like there is some database with diamond ID numbers matched up to their owners or anything like that. So, the number without the report is meaningless.
NickiMinajStan 6,893
First world problems TBH, who cares . I say let her have it, it is not like Valentino *needs* it, and she appears to have done what she had to: she put it on lost objects, etc. GaGa never gave it back, and Valentino never bothered to collect it for months. If it was given to her by the Hotel, then what was she supposed to do? wear it regularly? of course she's selling it, what else is she gonna do with such a dress? . I will not assume ill intention from any side on this case: the maid 100% acted legally, the dress was given to her by the hotel because literally no one was claiming it, and hotel administrators probably assumed it was intentionally left as a gift. GaGa probably left it assuming her label would handle it (or maybe she legitimately forgot), and Valentino might have assumed GaGa simply decided to keep it, and given she is such a prominent figure, they just decided to not claim it back. All of which is understandable, probably miscommunication, it happens, they're all humans. Now, I don't like this idea of rich people being lazy and then putting the blame on the "poor": the maid didn't stole it. Both GaGa and Valentino are f*cking rich, battling a maid over a stupid dress they don't need is such a terrible look, and honestly unfair. Or at least: it is unfair to imply misconduct on her, when they mismanaged the whole thing to begin with. So I'm sorry but I'm on the maid's side, #ImWithHer HEART OF EVER-FROST

mindintransit 465
Since this is something that everyone involved has done countless times, it just sounds like a clusterf*ck. Valentino was responsible for making sure that they had the dress back. The hotel does not appear to have notified anyone. I suspect that Valentino actually didn't know the dress was missing until they saw it was up for auction. They didn't realize until then that the dress had not been picked up and stored wherever dresses that will never be worn again are stored. The thing that might be a problem is the authentication. The Golden Globes was 10 months ago. Especially after all this time, tags or whatever won't authenticate the dress without the cooperation of Valentino. And I can't see that the dress has value as the Lady Gaga Golden Globe dress unless it's authenticated by Valentino. Gaga surely doesn't care and isn't involved. Valentino knows that they didn't pick up the dress or even realize it was missing. I imagine that they are not pleased with the hotel. It's not really a big deal to anyone but the maid who wants to make some money. Might as well let her sell it. Without authentication by Valentino it's just a dress that would be fun to own. Someone will have to be willing to pay a lot of money for a dress that appears to be the dress Lady Gaga wore but is authenticated solely by a hotel maid. Valentino claiming it pretty much confirms its authenticity, and everyone auctioning will be aware of this, as there are news articles reporting it. I just kinda feel bad for the maid because she might have legitimately thought it was left as a gift to her. I know some of you might be like "wut", but apparently that's a thing. A while ago Emilia Fart uploaded a video detailing an inconvenience she had while renting a room/apartment. The host accused her of leaving the place in chaotic conditions as she left a bunch of stuff. But she claims she intentionally left those things there for the maids to keep, as she thought they might like them. Of course the things Emilia Fart left on that room were NOT a Valentino dress but my point is: some people apparently do that. They leave stuff intentionally, so that workers can keep it. And although it is of course unusual for a celebrity to just give away a dress like that, GaGa is known for hugging the homeless and paying for her fans' medical bills. It is not impossible to believe she'd actually leave the dress on purpose for the maid to keep. So maybe the maid has been all this time thinking GaGa liked her and left her the dress, feeling special as hell... only to be end up being called a delinquent . It really isn't fair . Valentino, sis, you got the publicity you needed, the dress is gorgeous, it hit the headlines back when she wore it, she got an Oscar, everyone won, let the good sis maid have it, stop HEART OF EVER-FROST
