Yep. It was horrible in 2010 for Gag's. When famous women are at their peak (not necessarily in their careers, but mainstream fame/tabloid attention), I feel like the GP loves to tear them down. Tabloids/twitter/the GP twists around comments, or interprets something with the most bad faith take possible, or exaggerates a dumb comment into being much worse than it actually is.  For example, in this case folks overreacting about a mildly insensitive metaphor. Adele and Bey are the only ones who really escaped this, although Bey has to deal with some racist right wingers.

One could say it's worse now than it was several years ago, with everyone trying to go viral to get clicks or tweets. In some ways, Gag's is arguably more successful now than she was in 2010—but she doesn't get the same level of attention—which is probably a good thing because it doesn't make her as big of a target. But when LG6 comes around, people are going to be looking to drag her over the mildest of things again until the attention wears off. I really think that's why a lot of celebs basically stay off social media/barely do interviews anymore.

*I feel like I keep having to put this like a disclaimer, that there are legitimate reasons for cancelling people and dragging them and all and that Gaga's tweet was a bit insensitive, but people (and not just anti-stans) go so overboard nowadays. Sometimes it feels like people are looking for drama or to get angry on twitter about anything. Also, kind of reminds me that stuff most celebrities did in 2008-2012 which would get them some minor negative PR or just be ignored would be a huge PR disaster for them nowadays.

Watch Bobby take her twitter away lol. Seriously amazed that her mildly tone deaf tweet became a bit of a -thing-.

I don’t want to be a bitch, but just because people are incompetent to recognize metaphorical language, I’m not going to act like this needs to spark some kind of conversation. :laughga:

Not the first time Gaga has been open about how isolating fame can be and certainly won’t be her last.

Also, who is she being insensitive to exactly? I’m very aware many people are thrown in jail unjustly for many reasons, but it’s not like I’m siding with the ones who actually deserve it just because it’s considered a tough experience to go through. :reductive:

Yep, kind of side eyeing how people are unaware or only half understand metaphors and similes. Some people are acting like metaphorical language has to be two equally bad things, or so on...and I'm like "wut?"

Insensitive wasn't really the right word—very mildly tone deaf was a better way to characterize it. Personally, it doesn't bother me at all but I get how people who struggle might mildly bristle at very privileged people remarking on their own struggle...especially when they are a bit hyperbolic. I feel like famous people kind of have to preface anything like this with "I know I'm lucky" to avoid any backlash nowadays, even tho it's obvious they know they are lucky in some ways.

But yeah, the truth is as you said fame is very isolating and has down sides even if people are privileged. I remember when the tabloids basically contributed to Britney's issues, and social media contributed to Amanda Bynes and Amy Winehouse's problems/Amy's death....and then the entertainment twitter figures, which used to drag Amy relentlessly, acted all sad and like they never did anything sh*tty.

Yeah, I can definitely see how it might come across as thoughtless for some people, yet I still think the effort to understand the intended meaning needs to be done.

I think she’s using the concept of prison in a very rudimentary and superficial way, everyone who is familiar with celebrity and tabloid culture knows how dehumanizing it can get, specially for a woman like Gaga.

People act like fame is only about receiving, but it’s also about giving away. Not going to act like it’s the worst it can get though, that’s why it’s called a metaphor after all.

The toxic fandom should really leave Amanda Knox and Gaga alone. The things I saw on Twitter after Amanda’s tweet were really disgusting.

Lmaooo, let’s say “Love is like a prison” — that is a metaphor.

Fame being compared to a prison are two conflicting things. You’re comparing the world of glamour to a place where some innocent people are being detained, hurt or even killed.

It’s not like she was forced into fame like people who are jailed because of their skin color or poverty.

You don't know the "story" of Fame when Gaga literally described it in 2 eras. Gaga lives in Fame, you don't.

EDIT: Due to causing destruction.

She is insane.

Fun fact: I was standing near her famous partner in crime, Raffaele Sollecito (who was also deeply involved in the murder) at a Marilyn Manson concert in Florence in 2015

You ain’t slick. Amanda and Raffaele are both innocent. Stop spewing lies. There is no evidence against them. The bullying needs to stop. I’m in touch with both of them, so I kindly ask you to stop.

The media coverage in the UK was very different—there was some documentary or article a few years back about how the UK media really f*cked up/bungled their coverage and barely mentioned the lack of DNA, etc.. I absolutely believe she's innocent, but I get why so many people in the UK thought she was guilty while everyone in the states agree that she's innocent.

But yeah, people need to leave Amanda and Gaga alone.

Agreed. Same with Italy. The media played huge if not the biggest part in their convictions back in 2009. It was awful.

She's not being insensitive, people are just way too sensitive. Watch her commit suicide and ya'll gonna be like, "she should've talked about what she was going through more."

Inb4 y'all make a big deal out of this. We know it's a metaphor, Gaga knows it's a metaphor, most sensible people know it's a metaphor.

I just know this is gonna become a 4 page thread of overreactions.
