I don't understand Shallow

First of all, I guess this thread has been created a few times on GGD, because I can't be the only one who wonders what Shallow means, and I'm sorry about that, but I couldn't find any of these threads (if they actually exist) :emma:

The fact is that I don't understand the lyrics of Shallow. Don't get me wrong, it's a wonderful song, and it probably makes sense but I don't understand it.

I'm off the deep end

Watch as I dive in

I'll never meet the ground

Crash through the surface

Where they can't hurt us

We're far from the shallow now

In the sha-ha-sha-ha-low

In the she-ha-sha-la-la-la-low

In the she-ha-sha-ha-low

We're far from the shallow now.

Like, are you diving in or will you avoid to meet the ground?

Are you in the shallow or are you far from the shallow?

What is the truth? :oprah:

Earlier Jackson was to end his life by diving into water and shallow was written in narrative to this story.

Later on Gaga and others liked shallow too much that they wanted it to be main song of the movie and important pillar to Ally and Jackson's relationship.

Read the lyrics with context to Jackson diving deep into water, in shallow deep.

I get you. The lyrics are contradictory.  If you're in the shallow, how can you be far from it?

I understand the rest of the song: the speaker is diving into the water from the deep end, and the water's so deep that she doesn't meet the ground, and then after diving into the water, she swims back up and crashes through the surface (which has a double meaning: not only the surface of the water, but surface as in artifice, as in superficial things).....That part makes sense to me, but then we get to the seemingly contradictory chorus.

SPOILER (for this year old movie :neyde:):

From my understanding, it was supposed to be the finale of the film, after Jack commits suicide. The lyrics of the song reference the earlier films when his character actually drowns in the ocean. The song was moved to the climax of the film though because I guess the producers saw the potential for it to be a bigger hit and not just a song for the credits

I think she means 'crash through the surface' when she dives in. Away from the shallow, they can't hurt us, and it's that deep that she won't even hit the ground. The only thing contradictory in my opinion is that she sings 'in the sha ha sha ha low' and then 'we're far from the shallow now', but I guess it's just to make it sound nice.

I updated my comment. I generally put a letter save it and then write full context.

Otherwise by the time I post, it will go to second page

Bonkers

It's about a pop star who had these fans who were really shallow, and she kept trying to make them happy but nothing was ever enough.

One day, she met a handsome movie star and ditched those loser fans.

So now, she's far from the shallow.

Yeah I’ve always hated the “in the sha-ha-ha-hallow/ far from the shallow now” part. Plus it makes zero sense :saladga: Aside from that i get

I think we all know the story by now, don't be scared to "spoil" :ladyhaha:

You made some points though:vegas:

Oh I get it now :ladyhaha: You should write something like "(I'm about to write a whole commentary) " because that was a little bit… misleading :laughga::ally:

Sour Jube

I think the lyrics are meant to be taken figuratively. They are intensely evocative and touch the deepest parts of me. Literally her best lyric of all time is that belt/howl in the song. I feel like there is so, so much packed into it. It is someone metaphorically jumping off the deep end - taking a big risk both by going on stage, doing it with someone they have feelings for, leaving the strange security of depression and betting it all on their own talent/life/worth. It is also someone absolutely soaring when they take this risk, ie. never meeting the ground.

This story matches with that RaRa bitch a lot
