D.C. officials and advocates have agitated for generations to make the District the 51st state. On Thursday, they make their case to Congress.

For the first time since 1993, a House committee will hold a hearing on legislation that would turn most of the nation’s capital into the State of Washington, Douglass Commonwealth.

Can someone explain what the benefits of it being a state are, why it hasn't been approved in the past, and why "democracy is being denied"?

Yass! It's about time. :firega:

Over a million people in a majority poc place have been getting literally no representation or say in Congress for far too long.

Puerto Rico next. It's a fully US owned territory. 700,000 mostly latino people being denied the right to democracy while being impacted by US laws. :neyde:

They didn't want the national capitol to become super important or get an unfair advantage as a state because that's where the federal government would be too. Mostly BS.

Democracy is being denied because in the US legislative body, the Congress, seats are granted in the House to each state based on population. In addition, each state gets a fixed number (2) in the Senate. DC gets 0. So while these people are bound by US laws, they're not allowed to even represent people to legislate for them :saladga:

And it's important that DC is a majority non-white place. That's the reason they haven't been granted statehood for so long. The US has a history of trying to censor or underrepresent non-white voters.

They need to split California...flops

Why? :awkney:

It's a fringe movement. That's not what Californians want, so... Meanwhile DC has been asking for statehood.

literally there are no reasons to oppose it. I think there is going to be some sort of delay for the vote now? I didn't quite understand what happened.

Without statehood, residents of D.C. do not have any representatives in either chambers of congress, despite the city having a higher population than several U.S. states that DO have representation in congress.

(And yes, DC residents CAN vote in federal elections, including the Presidential election despite what the other person said)

Right now, just about the only reasons why it hasn't happened is because of semantics and arguments from the right claiming that democrats are just doing it for more votes. The possibility of D.C. statehood is continuing to tick up as democrat leaders continue with another major push for it.

DC's super liberal so a lot of Republicans oppose for political reasons because it will be harder from them to get majorities in the house, but especially the senate. It's such bullshit because if DC was right-leaning, they'd be on board for statehood in a heartbeat

If DC was right leaning then wouldn’t the dems just oppose it too... this bs is from both sides

why don't they just make it a part of Virginia or Maryland...like I understand the representation aspect but it's a city... unless they're going to split it up.. what is the state of DC's capital? DC?

It could be a city state. It's definitely plausable.

And... "State of Washington, Douglass Commonwealth."
