Pop music doesn't know wtf it's doing

Normani tried to jump start her solo career with Motivation, accompanied by a high energy choreographed video. It tanked.

Camila released 2 new singles. They're flopping. Meanwhile her label is still forcing us with that ridiculous Shawnila pr stunt in order to get Senorita to no. 1.

And now with that Ariana X Miley X Lana collab, which almost sounds like it's bound to be the biggest hit of the century with that kind of namepower, it is performing nowhere near as good as it even should be, and is currently freefalling on iTunes.

And I can list many other of the supposed 'big names' of our generation that are underperforming in recent times. Instead, what we got was a meme remix from 19 year old blocking those big names from getting to number 1 for several weeks, and now the current the number 1 is another song that's already 2 years old.

I mean it has always been pretty obvious that pop music is controlled by giant corporate machines. But I think they are really losing touch with the public nowadays. When they try to adapt to new sounds, they only end up releasing tracks that are less than quality. It's one thing to release 'inauthentic' music for mass consumption, but what happens when they're all really shitty to begin with? No one buys it. That's why the charts today are not decided by these machines, but rather by dumb teenagers on Spotify.  I'm not sure if that's better or worse, but it's definitely not good for 'traditional' fans of pop music.

It's been a decent year for pop music, compared to the last few, but I agree. It's like we're so close to another pop renaissance, but we're not quite getting our foot in the door yet. Trends, affected by social media and tech access, are definitely a huge factor.

That said, I'm surprised Motivation didn't take off. It had a lot of hype when it was first released.

I just think a lot of industry executives in pop music are kind of out of touch with what people really want with pop music. It's kind of always been that way though; instead of chasing radio play they chase streaming playlists and stuff. It's been the name of the game for decades now.

Gagaism

Honestly, the only ones I’ve been really interested in what they have in store are Adele, Rihanna and Gaga. I do think Rihanna will come with great songs as always but probably away that what is trending now.

Im not a music professional, but in my humble opinion pop music really needs more consistency. I had hopes on Taylor, I mean, Lover is a good album but is ok to me (and a really love her).

So, the only ones that I can see coming as salvation to pop music right now are Rihanna, Adele and Gaga.

Some big names flop, some new names succed. It has always been like that. Normani is not a big name and Camila's only huge hit was Havana but afterwards failed to replicate it success wise. Moreover this hear we had a lot female pop on the charts: Gaga, Ariana, Billie, Lizzo.

Honestly, Liar should have done much better... amazing song and the video is ace

Never Really Over by Katy was pretty huge and although Small Talk was a relatively small hit, she is still performing it and people are recieving it well. Harleys in Hawaii is due out very soon... she said she is putting out songs every couple of months so expect that in October.

Taylor had Lover which is such an amazinv album... but could be shortened to 16 or 17 tracks... theres a couple on there that are pretty bad. You Need To Calm Down, False God, Lover, Crule Summer are legit some of the best tracks of 2019

But the rest of the releases from the female side this year have been lackluster. Lana ruined the CA song, Ariana released TUN but the only tracks which didn't age like milk were Imagine and Bloodline, Lizzo doesn't hit it for me, Miley had one good song but it was accompanied by a bad video...

All of those songs are weak that's why. Pop music hasn't been exciting for a very long time.

"Motivation" is cute, but it's not a hit... by any means. Camila's songs are forgettable, I've heard them a few times and can't even recall how they sound. That collaboration with Lana, Miley, etc sounds like something that would have come out in the early 00s. It's dated upon arrival.

In short, pop music needs a renaissance. These mainstream artists need to expand their sound and redefine pop music. I hope this is what the 2020s gives to us, a rebirth and reimagining of the pop artist.

I think ariana created a landscape that is ripe for a pop renaissance. I think Gaga will usher it in fully in 2020, tbh. Then followed by Beyonce, Rih, Katy, and Adele. That'd be my dream.
