Wouldn't the best version be on the physical album? Yes; however, to listen to songs from the CD without a CD player, you'd have to rip to a lossless format. What happens with traditional masters is they are "hot" and so lossy conversion algorithms (such as ripping to MP3) can worsen the quality much more. Mastered for iTunes means it was mastered in a way that once compressed to MP3, it will end up generally better than what a standard master's conversion to MP3 would've produced.
