Villanelle 1,247
I dream of the day when Gaga sings a full rendition of 'Somewhere Over The Rainbow'. I think it would be beautiful. People may disagree, but I honestly truly believe that Gaga is the closest 'star' we have today who bears any likeness to Judy Garland or at least, someone from that era. When I saw Gaga performing the jazz concert in London, it was almost like I was back in time! She just pulls it off SO well and it's like you couldn't imagine her ever singing the pop songs at all. It's quite spectacular- I can't describe it. She just embodies someone from that era. As a performer she reminds me of Judy a bit (when she does acoustic/jazz stuff). I could imagine her singing this, from the original (well one of the original) A Star Is Born movie!
Defmix100 6,371
have you seen her cover here? I know it's not full either but wasn't sure if you'd only heard the bit she did in ASIB

Her voice was just perfect.
SKANK 14,288
Gaga's voice is absolutely beautiful, and dynamic, but I'm not sure she could pull off a Judy cover. In the same way her version of Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood pales in comparison to Nina Simone's version. I'm not sure there are many parallels between Judy and Gaga, other than being gay icons. Garland was a tortured soul, and you heard that in every note she sang. That being said, I'd love to see Gaga follow in Judy's footsteps and revive the variety show format. RudraCNG 14,976
You're so right. I think she has the perfect type of deep, soul voice to cover that beautiful song. Let's hope someday she'll do.
Tomas 117
Oh man I'd love her to sing some Judy songs! I have no doubt she could pull it off perfectly.

I won't say she could do it like Judy, but hearing her sing a snippet of Over The Rainbow at the opening of ASIB, I wanted more. I wanted her to perform the full song in that rendition that she was doing.
old sanuk 366
I hear it, too. Gaga emotes on stage, gives it all as Judy Garland and Édith Piaf did; the emotional catch in the voice, occasionally over the edge, even crying. By comparison, others are tightly controlled onstage, technically perfect and gifted, but giving only so much, never all, never close to the edge. I dream of Gaga singing at Carnegie Hall the entire 1961 Judy concert, as Rufus Wainwright did. She could sing that canon, but times have changed; she might not want to, or could not, as some of the material is of its time and place, while remaining some of the most challenging songs for any singer to sing. G U C C I 5,465
Omg you have know idea how much I wish she would be asked to sing something of Judy’s at this years oscars! I’m sure Renee Z will be nominated and so will the movie that premiers this month called Judy. It looks amazing and I could see them doing something like that if the film has several nominations. Gaga is a lot like Judy. Yes Judy was a very tortured soul but Gaga has the ability to make you feel so much emotion when she sings! More so than just about any other singer today. Plus she does embody old Hollywood so well. Her jazz shows prove that. And also I disagree with the comparison of Gaga and Nina’s songs. They are both unique to each artist and Gaga’s is equally as amazing hers and Nina’s voices are just very different.
