Big part of this begins in the family and among friends. This is why it's important to call out anyone when they make such jokes however harmless they may be. Because the more you listen to it, the more it becomes normalized, the more your subconscious will get used to it, even when you're not a racist person yourself. I know some white posters will be like "oh it's harmless, why apologize for everything?". No it's not. What's easier, to learn to not say things that offend others or asking others to shut up and have a thick skin? I think the former is the easier and more reasonable option. In old cartoons they were almost depicted as monkeys, which is why this is bad. It’s racially insensitive. To compare a human being to an animal is not only disgusting but also degrading. I can tell her intentions were not ill and that she truly feels sorry, a huge part of this is like he implied, is being miseducated and insensitive to cultural issues/stereotypes. I love how he forgave her and tried to educate her from a place of love. This way, we can truly progress as community. It's all about communication and teaching. Skipping the history part, if a white man with a hairy chest was invited by Ellen to the show and if she called him an "orangutan", nobody would make a problem. I agree that it's stupid to compare human to animals, but according to darwinism human has evolved from an ape. I recently called my grandma an "ape" because she bought 5KG of banana on sale. She laughed and said she bought it thinking about her's little ape (me). So I quite understand this "Anchor" that she really didn't have bad intentions. River 127,324 Posted September 1, 2019 Share Posted September 1, 2019 He's right, words can hurt, I'm pretty sure some people used sexists and offending words against her to make their point, instead of pausing for a second and realizing that she's just a person, she made a mistake and there's a way and words to point out that mistake and to give her the chance to understand her mistake and learn from it... you can only attack when the person is not taking the opportunity to apology and to learn, but at least be kind enough to give them this opportunity.. and I'm talking about any subject. He handled it like everyone should handle these kind of comments when the person understands their mistake and honest about their apology, with love, teaching and forgiveness. The difference here is white people did not experience being caged, traded of, sold and treated like they were less than human. So pardon black people, and brown people if they get offended if they are compared to apes. Because they have been treated like that in the past.
