Gays saving the world once again. :diane:

Edit:

Just saw your post. I guess I unintentionally copied your homework.

Life experiences change the way your genes express without the need structural DNA mutations.

So are they saying that people don’t born gay but that they become gay after experiencing certain environmental factors?

I think what it simply means is that humans cannot be genetically modified to become "not gay".

I feel it's a psychological thing rather than a genetic thing. However, it should never be classified as a mental illness. It's just an uncontrollable preference. I myself have no idea why the female anatomy is just so off-putting to me :laughga:

Its whatever, this way, homophobics are going to say we werent "born this way". And if there was a gay gene, they would then say its a "genetic disorder", so we lose either way.

We gay cuz we gay, thats it.

Exactly lol. All this debate doesn’t matter. I mean, true, it’s science’s job to find out about everything whether it matters or not, but let’s say if someone grows up loving checkered flannel shirts there isn’t a gene that determines that but who tf cares really no one tries to change them.

It only matters because religious hacks try to force the “wrongness” on us and when they have their way they can twist whatever scientific findings there are to “it’s not normal and not natural”

The title is misleading. The study says "there's not one gay gene, rather hundreds that can be linked to sexuality." Sexuality is likely a mixture of some genes, some environmental factors (epigenetics, hormones, psychology, and more).

Title is a bit misleading, The study did show that Genetics may be linked to sexuality, just that there isn't a single one 'Gay gene' .

The researchers were able to find five genetic variants that were statistically associated with same-sex sexual behaviors, but none had a large effect and none could itself predict same-sex behaviors. These variants, along with thousands of others in the human genome that have even smaller effects, together accounted for 8 to 25 percent of variation in same-sex sexual behavior, the analysis showed. Some of the variants were correlated with same-sex sexual behavior in men, others in women, and some in both.

Basically, these Genes combined with Environmental factors could determine ones sexuality.

Not any more than they "become" straight. Maybe kids are a blank slate with no sexuality. :)

There's some evidence to show that sexuality may be predetermined. Look up the ones that link androgen exposure with sexual orientation. It's not conclusive but it's not "absurd" either. I believe the answer is likely a mixture of nature and nurture but to deny nature entirely is what's absurd.

We're biological beings, we gotta remember that.

Yeah, I think children are born blank with no sexuality and as they go through puberty and develop hormones is when they realize what they’re into.

but imo sexuality is nothing more than a personal preference.  Just like how some people prefer chocolate ice cream and others prefer vanilla.  Imo, I don’t think it’s in our DNA or predetermined at birth.

It's not true that it happens during puberty. Many, many kids know their romantic attraction to same sex people very early on when they're 4 or 5. I knew when I was 5.

You may have that opinion but this study and many others have shown it's indeed linked to genetics, just not fully dependent on genes. You'd be surprised at how much impact genes have on a person. It's possible even ice cream flavor preferences are linked to DNA. Especially because of epigenetics which are much harder to study.

Sexual orientation is much more complex than flavors though. Sometimes eating enough of a flavor you don't like helps you develop the taste. Whereas for purely gay people (not bi), attempts at changing sexual orientation badly fail.

It may not be predetermined at birth but you may be predisposed to one more than the other.
