I get so wistful, nostalgic and existential thinking about this.  We are such a small blip in the scheme of things.  A nice, gentle reminder not to dwell in anxiety or depression and so on.

And, oh, how lucky we are to have improbably lived during the era of our Lady :tony:
Thank you for the wonderful read!

I wonder why we always say other intelligent species. When I look all over this world, we are far from being intelligent :poot:  :madge: .

There's still an awful amount of things in our favour on earth tho

- goldilocks zone

- ozone

- a strong magnetic field for a planet of our size which protects us from solar winds that would otherwise destroy DNA

- gas giants that absorb the majority of large asteroids

- a part of the galaxy that's ideal for life to be relatively undisturbed without black holes, magnetars, or large concentration of large starts going nova to kill us

I could go on and on.... Given the many billions of planets im certain there's more life out there

But it's probably quite rare... Like a very small fraction of planets having any life and even even smaller fraction having intelligent life

And I'm super Into space. I have been since I was 6 years old and always keep up with the latest developments

Truth is there's no concensus on this stuff... Different groups of researchers and different groups of scientists have different opinions, theories and conclusions about how frequent and common other life may be

While very few scientists think we're alone, just how many neighbors we have on our galaxy is open to debate

Edit: One major thing is that many scientists believe is that while other types of life like silicon based may be possible, Carbon based life like us may be the most common because carbon based life more easily goes thru mutations allowing for evolution more easily

Carbon based life like us would require a planet with a lot of the same features that earth has and a planet having all of those simultaneously by coincidence would be quite rare

So I myself side with scientists that think life may actually be quite rare tho I'm sure we're not completely alone nevertheless even just in our own galaxy nevermind the while universe.

I saw a video a long time ago stating a theory of how we haven't see any other intelligent lifeform like us that are seeking other civilizations. It's basically include all the conditions you said and more as an extremely big "wall" that prevents civilizations from reaching a point where they can contact different planets.

One scenario of this theory is that Human is one of the very rare lifeforms to evolve enough to jump pass this "wall", hence why we haven't found any other yet.

Another also as likely and much more grim is this is still somewhere in our future. Many alient civilizations more advanced than ours had reached this wall, unable to pass its conditions and perish before able to contact other intelligent lifeforms.

Seeing recent development regarding the state of our planet, I want to hear your thoughts on the theory, especially the likelyhood of the second scenario.

Thank you for this. Imo, there is the question of probability of extra-terrestrial life and, on the other hand, the issue of alien "intelligent" (or sentient) life and related hypothetical civilizations and how "advanced" they are. On that specific question, I guess you are familiar with the Fermi Paradox: https://www.space.com/25325-fermi-paradox.html

There's a name for what ur talking about it's called "The Great Filter" or "Fermies Paradox"

Great-Filter1.png

- A small percentage of planets would have conditions for anything to evolve period

- of those where basic life can survive, only a fraction is favourable or stable enough for anything past basic vegetation or bacteria to survive

- Of the smaller portion that is capable of more complex life, it has to sustain life for billions of years without huge disasters like asteroids, big climate shifts, vulcanic instability etc wipping out everything

- Finally you get to a tiny portion of planets with life that last long enough to finally produce intelligent life. Of those yet another filter event would happen... And that is can intelligent life not kill themselves off with war, environmental destruction, perhaps genetic enhancements gone wrong etc etc etc

Finally by the time u get to an interstellar civilization, the great filter wipped out the vast majority of life before getting to this stage

------------

Now even among the few species who make it further than humans so far have based on this theory, they would still have challanges like limitations by laws of physics. If theoretical ways of cheating travel faster than light like warping space time turns out to not be possible, species no matter how advanced they get may never be able to travel the huge vast distances of space fast enough to ever make proper contact, visits or maintain a relationship with another species

In addition the universes time scales are so large that the nearest species to our level of advancement in our galaxy could be still millions of years ahead or behind us... In essence species would be so far apart from eachother in development they'd have nothing in common and no reason for any relationship even if interstellar travel faster than light in someway turned out to be possible

Further more there is a lot of scientists who now believe Humans are actually early comers to the universe because peak star formation is still billions of years away, and the first generation of stars probably did not create any life because few elements to start anything existed the first few billion years in universe meaning earth would of started evolving quite early

So not only would the great filter mean very few species would even make it as far as we have, and not only would huge distances make any contact difficult, but there may be very few species if any in our galaxy more advanced than us to begin with

Basically if humans survive over the next thousands or even millions of years, we may find that our search for life only finds simple life forms and life at our level or ahead may be hard to find if there even is any (at least in our galaxy)

But even if there are races further ahead than us... Even 100,000 years ahead would make us so irrelevant to their eyes they may have no interest in wasting time with us

So a relationship or contact with another species to be honest seems like something that won't happen anytime soon

Earth is not habitable because we destroyed it but I think it's a good idea to find somewhere else more hospitable than Earth and continue what we've been doing here on our planet. If there are a lot of planets that are habitable we could move around planets to planets every century forever. Best option for us human beings, the only creatures that self destruct

That's not practical at all

Moving billions of people possibly many hundreds of light years away if the nearest habitable world is not near would be a rediculously difficult task

Tbh if we became so advanced that we could casually just be moving planets, then we'd be advanced enough to also cure our environment in some way

Also no other planet is gonna be ideal for humans... Finding a planet with a gravity very simmilar to earth (that affects our health) a very simmilar atmosphere and climate and food would be super difficult to find.

Even if other worlds are habitable for other species it doesn't mean they'd be an ideal fit for our physiology

In addition those planets would have completely different bacteria and substances were not accustomed to and our immune system may struggle to keep up

Earth already has the right distance from the sun, the right atmosphere, the right gravity, the right amount of magnetic field etc etc etc that's ideal for human health and life

It would be much easier to try and fix our world than to try to terraform or even just adapt to another planet that's gonna be so off for human physiology

Hmm..that's the scary scenario to me.  If ever the human race find them, it could definitely be a danger to us, imagine us discovering ants, we would just dissect them, not even care if they have awareness, emotions etc. We ourselves do that with cows, pigs, etc we eat them even if deep down we know they have emotions. :gum:

Or they may just not care to do anything with us at all... Maybe take a few for study and that's about it

We'd be no use to them labor wise as we can't replace advanced technology and we wouldn't be intellectually advanced enough to even entertain them

Earth would be useless for resources because earth doesn't have a lot of 1 thing (other than water) that would make mining worth it

We have a lot of resources in terms of variety but if they were interested in specific resources there's other planets and moons with higher concentrations of just about anything u can think of. One of Saturn's moons for example has over 100X as much natural gas as earth, Mars has a much larger concentration of iron

So any race much more advanced enough probably would neither helps us or harm us. They just wouldn't care most likely (unless they were just a super curious race which is always a possibility)

But overall the vast majority of life we'd find is likely to be less advanced or developed than us not more
