Summary:

This Friday, during the Bronx heatwave, a 39-year old father from Rockland County (New York) left his 1-year old twin babies in a parked car to go work a full shift at a nearby hospital, letting them die of heatstroke in the blasting parking lot heat.

He claims he forgot his kids were in the car: after his shift he actually drove the car for a while until realizing his children were inside, before jumping out of the car screaming, attracting a lot of attention from nearby citizens.

The man was arrested and charged for manslaughter and criminally negligent homicide.

Some more important info we all should know:

— even at 70°F/21°C outside, cars parked in sunlight can easily warm up beyond 120°F/49°C when left out long enough
— never leave children, the elderly or dogs in such a car, as heatstroke can occur in just a few minutes, even with the window opened
– more children die in cars every single year in the States (and, I imagine, other Western countries): just last year was the deadliest year for children in cars, the heat killing a record-breaking 51 kids in the US alone

It's a "mistake" that transcends a context of accidental circumstances for sure But I think he's going to feel guilty enough for the rest of his life. I also feel sad for him.

There was a similar case here in Texas.

The psychological aspect is still being studied. It’s about how your work routine affects your mind. Overriding that a significant change in your life has occurred (having newborns)

What’s interesting is the person on trail was also a man. Since women go through bodily trauma with birth, they might not have this happen to them. Versus a man not giving birth.

I have a feeling this man will also mention how the car was quiet (likely from the newborns sleeping.)

I remember reading 2 stores about this before, where a mom (who was known as the "Worst Mom in America") did the same thing to her daughter and a dad who did this to his baby, but they weren't charged. Is it different in each state?

From what I’ve read this seems to be a loving father who made an honest to god mistake that will haunt him for the rest of his life. I read that he makes an hour commute to work every day and dropped off an older child at a different day care the same day. His memory failed him and he went to work thinking he dropped his three children off at their respective daycares. It’s unfortunate but this stuff happens. I won’t spend time calling him any nasty names because this is a man who will suffer for the rest of his life for this.

Such a sad story. 

 I think it is determined case by case and state doesn't matter.  Where I live there was a high profile case where the dad left his toddler in the car, but they had evidence he searched for what happens if you leave a pet in a hot car.  Also, he took his son to breakfast and then drove just a mile away and left him there.  And what I remember hearing the most was that he spent his day sexting and that is never going to sit well with a jury.  He got life in prison with no parole.

It’s horrifying that it’s a regular reality and I feel for everyone involved in this.

This happens to a decent amount of very good and mindful people who are amazing parents. Especially those who have a routine and are experiencing lack of sleep. One way to help with this is to leave your purse or a shoe (something you need) in the back seat with the babies. 

So don’t hate on all parents who do this, as it is a horrific tragedy that can truly happen to anyone. I mean how many times have people here been on autopilot and driven half way to work before you realize that is not where you need to be. 

HOWEVER. This case is fishy. The smell in that car would have been so atrocious that there is no way he could not have noticed and actually driven. He was looking for a place to pull over and make a scene in front of people as a way to cover it up.

RIP to the poor babies.
