Anybody else miss ‘09-2012 Gaga?

Kind of, but like in the way I'm nostalgic about my own life from that period. It's fun to look back and remember the good times, but I also wouldn't necessarily want to go back.

With Gaga I loved those years and I'm so glad we had them, but I wouldn't want her to be like that or act like that now. I'm happy she didn't get stuck.

Second of all - to say her early work has no substance is just wrong. Unrequited love, an obsession with fame, an unhealthy relationship with sex due to body image, celebrating life rather than mourning death, having your dreams crushed and embracing the pain, being addicted to praise and drugs, exorcising your hatred towards your rapist.

Honestly... it's not really that deep. Not to mention that I'm actually talking more about TF and TFM more than Born This Way (though BTW does have some meaningless generic duds that I skip nowadays like Heavy Metal Lover).

But you've kinda verbalized exactly what Gaga did: Used big and fluffy words to give simple pop music a bigger and beyond meaning that it doesn't really bear. That was her thing. She was fully aware that she did that, cuz that's exactly what Andy Warhol did with his art.

The thing is just that Gaga realized that it's kinda ungratifying and exhausting to come up with explanations why your song about f*cking is high brow art, when she could just talk about what is actually close to her heart and share her actual feelings.

But she's still been doing the exact same thing since Joanne, but in a far less convincing and interesting way. Perfect Illusion is about social media? A makeup line is a "battle for your life"? Sis...

The ASIB promo cycle was painful. Tears in her eyes as she recites the 100 people line for the billionth time, I'm actually laughing thinking about it:sharon:

There is an advantage to being a Gaga fan that isn’t so much of a pop fan but a music generalist.  I fell in love with her voice and musicality in spite of her being a pop star. “Lady Gaga” has always been an ever changing persona to me and all the visuals and theatricality are interesting but not a core reason I’m a fan.    To me her open humanness now is a benefit and her causes she supports are important.  I like her as an actress and want to see more.  Im a Stefani fan not a fan of any particular “Lady Gaga“.

People get so wrapped up when she breaks their perceptions of who they think she is supposed to be.

Gaga’s musical, artistic, and business interests are wider than most of her fans who are zeroed in on pop music and aesthetics.  I get some of you may find it frustrating that she doesn’t only concentrate on producing your preferred variety of music now, but it’s probably the reality for the rest of her life that while she may come back to your kind of pop at times she will be exploring other things also.  I have zero cares or needs for makeup, but I’m not going to whine and moan and try to tear her down.  When she’s ready to release music, I’ll be ready to receive it.  In the meantime many other music artists are out there and she’s given me many hours of music I can still enjoy.

Runway

No she rebranded herself which is why she’s a legend in 2019 where as in 2012 she was seen as a clown who smoked marijuana

As per my previous post.... I don't f*cking care about promo cycles, I have better things to do. Whether you think her art is less or more convincing is just a personal opinion, which I've also said before. I don't really think there's a lot you can add or explain, so this exchange is done

I still love her work from 2013 to 2018 but yes, those were the days. She was committed to her Gaga artistry every second of the day.

I still think in the future she’ll deliver a creatively genius era like The Fame - Born This Way era was. Every artist have their creative peaks (in the pop scene, good examples are David Bowie, Madonna, Grace Jones). I’ve come to terms that we’re in her “resting” phase. :nick:

For those belittling her earlier work, it’s not a good look. Specially cause every now and then she give us hints that she’s still that woman that loves to drag herself up and give a middle finger up (or lick one on stage) for no reason.

No not really. I get a great sense of nostalgia from her old stuff and I loved the journey we've been on, but I'm happy the with the direction she has been heading in.

Personality wise I think she is more open and honest than ever. She just seems really content to do what she wants right now and there is no pretense about it.

Music wise the writing on Joanne and the ASIB soundtrack have been some of the best work she has ever done imo.

I don’t and I can’t believe how many fans dismiss new work, particularly Joanne. It was such a personal album. Yes it is different, but her vulnerability in it and the messages she tackles in it are some of her best. I see it JUST as creative and encompassing as her early work, just in a different way. Her music and her message is becoming more mature as she ages. I would love to see for LG6 her return to Dance music but still keep the maturity from the last several years.
