She also dies.

Yeah, but her being a different skin tone is a bigger change than giving her a happy end instead of dying. “BECAUSE THE BOOK”

Not happy. Ariel is an iconic ginger. It would be like casting a Weasley without red hair.

I get that, Ariel was my favourite princess. And who's to say they can't dye her hair red?
And if they don't change it, the departure from red hair is a small price to pay for some representation, in my opinion. If there's an opportunity and a willingness to cast a black female as a princess, then go for it.

And it's not as if Ariel doesn't need some changes. As I said, I loved Ariel, but her character is very weak since she basically changed her body, gave up her voice, and abandoned everything for a random dude. There's room for tweaks lol.

Get the pinot ready, because it's turtle time.

Y'all are really this pressed over a fairytale character being black? Just take a deep breath and chill out. We know it's not really about the red hair. Wigs work miracles. And if they don't give her red hair in the movie? Oh well. You still have the animated movie.

Felonies? Loves it.

Because it makes no sense.

Listen, maybe I will feel differently when promo rolls out. But I’m not feeling this right now.

And there were a lot of people who said she was based on a white drag queen and can be played by anyone the director wants. Honestly people were more mad that Melissa was playing her cuz she’s not known for singing but I’ve got an open mind and would love to see her succeed in that role

I wasn't referring to the announcement of Melissa being cast, although there was backlash for that on social media. I was referring to a few months ago when Gaga's name was floated to play the part, and all hell broke loose. There was a significant amount of outrage that an octopus woman, who was inspired visually by Divine, was not being played by a black actress. Outrage on this forum. That outrage was ridiculous as anyone upset that Ariel is not being played by a white actress.

So like I said, ridiculous people on all ends.

Yes but she was introduced to the masses through a visual medium. If you ask the average person, they probably have no clue that the Little Mermaid was a very dark Danish fairytale. However the can tell you exactly how Ariel looks. Its like casting Harry Potter and omitting the scar.

I use HP because people were very upset about adult Hermione being cast by a black actress and I was absolutely okay with it. Her looks were ambiguous in the books and she existed in peoples consciousness for quite a long time before Emma Watson was ever cast. I feel like this is not the case with Ariel. I was born the year it came out and my whole early childhood was marked by that film. She has a pretty definitive appearance in the mind of so many people.

Harry's scar is integral to the story, Ariel's skin color isn't.

I understand what you are saying though, but perhaps this film will be a way to reintroduce the character of Ariel to the public, and give young black girls the same empowerment that Disney gave young red head girls.

If the last sentence was a dig a let me, I’m not white so that doesn’t really work. I was just telling you that cause it didn’t seem like you were familiar. But I guess some people like playing the victim and lack actual reasoning and logic.

Nnn, oké.

All I’m trying to say, but you keep ignoring, is that Disney ain’t telling the original story.

If Disney really wants to shake things up they should be remaking these movies but based directly on what happens in the books. Now that would spice up these fairytale movies! Lol :ladyhaha:

Although I do like very well known stories to stick to the original just because they’re iconic and we know them that way.... I don’t see why people should be THAT upset over this.

You do know wigs and hair dye exists right?

Just say you wish they hadn’t cast a black woman and move on. Be honest.

Exactly! She’s extremely talented and if anything, I’m glad this will give her the exposure she deserves. Her voice is truly beautiful

But that isn’t a good way to judge a movie that hasn’t even been shot yet, and no you can’t say weather a movie is good based on casting cuz people can ALWAYS prove you wrong

Literally everyone said Gaga was a bad choice for ASIB including many monsters who said she can’t act etc etc and then she got nominated for not one but two Oscars 🤷🏽‍♂️ Keep an open mind, you’ll enjoy stuff a lot more

Actually I can say if it’s bad because it’s SUBJECTIVE. I don’t care if other people think it’ll be good or bad because that’s THEIR opinion. I’m allowed to judge something based on whatever I deem has enough merit. & just because YOU don’t agree with doesn’t mean I don’t have an open mind.

also before telling me what I can or can’t do at least turn on autocorrect if you don’t know how to spell like come on... that’s what it’s there for 🤷🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️

When did I ignore that? You said ‘mermaids don’t actually exist so they can look like anything’ while there’s a clear image of Ariel described in the book. I only thought you didn’t know about the book and inform you. It was you who kept perpetuating the idea of me ‘quoting the book to my advantage’ when I ain’t even Caucasian in the slightest. :awkney:

Does it matter? Damage is done
