Because when an Indian woman was cast to play Jasmine who’s Arab I don’t think you were as outraged as this. It's such a pity that you refuse to understand my point. But while you're entitled to whatever opinion you have, this gives no right to call people racist when you clearly refuse or don't want to get my point across. I wasn't keeping up with the news about Alaadin. Y'all are making waaay too much complication out of this. People can have opinions and nobody is against black actresses or anything from what your tiny mentality tells you.

Its the way Ariel has been portrayed. This change is uncalled for. She's a freakin ginger and that how it's meant to be played.
gagaforgaga2010 117
I am so conflicted about how to take this. Also, I'm so over Lin-Manuel Miranda at this moment in time. I hated Hamilton, so I have low expectations for his "additions" to my favorite Disney classic. He surprised me as Jack the Leery though, so we'll see. The over sensitivity about a simple fact. Big LOL. Does it matter? Damage is done

Sang her songs. Pretended to be her when going to the pool. Mera is not that. I personally have no attachment to Mera other than looks whereas Ariel has my soul. Ariel is my childhood. You cannot supplement another character for that. Mera is not that. That being said I’ll personally wait for the movie until I decide if I like it or not. But nostalgia is a powerful thing. It’s feelings and memories about something you liked long ago that generally makes you feel good. Ariel is my childhood and it’s hard to see something you grow up with change. I personally have a hard time accepting change but may come around eventually. Why cant I be unhappy about a casting decision that does not represent my childhood vision of a character? I’m not saying Halle may not be great in the role and that the movie may not be good. But at the moment nostalgia is in high gear. It has nothing to do about race. Like the 2014 version of Annie. It was weird at first when it was announced that Annie would not be the iconic redhead but I personally like the 2014 version over the original. Quvenzhané is fab in the role as Annie. But I couldn’t make that decision until I saw the movie so I will do the same for this. I understand where you're coming from. Being a nineties kid, Ariel was one of my all time favourite princesses. Although honestly, being the gay-ass tomboy I was, Mulan ultimately stole my heart (and it looks like that adaptation might not even keep the original songs which is a f-ing tragedy) obviously Mulan's race isn't going to change but what matters more than race is artistic integrity. As long as this film adaptation keeps the heart, wonder and musical magic of the original than I'll be delighted. Personally I'm so excited for Halle because she/they just has the most perfect face and voice for the role. She's so cute yet ethereally stunning, her face looks hand drawn, she's so gorgeous. Pop her in some seashells and an amazing wig and I'm sure she'll dazzle us all! Especially in the Caribbean setting I can imagine it being gorgeous and a really interestingly new interpretation. *she switched baristas. ☕️

The over sensitivity about a simple fact. Big LOL. Well...you’re the one playing the “I’m not white” race card... This isn’t even about the book any longer. Ariel does not commit suicide in the original Disney movie. The director went thru auditions and chose the actress that best represented his artistic vision. So much for “respect the artist” You brought up “by the book” to further give the narrative that a Black Woman should not have this role and should be recast. You can preface your statement with “I don’t have a problem” but racists aren’t gonna care and further protest this casting by you mentioning book canon, which Disney abandoned already. If you do some research you will note that Ariel is a danish princess, the movie and the folklore are set in a kingdom along European coastlines. Not America in 1837. She represents danish girls, as Tiana does African Americans. All ginger girls in my school looked up to Ariel when I was a kid. My point is, how can people justify taking someone else's representation for themselves? I would never justify someone white playing Pocahontas but at this rate, its gonna happen y'all. A black woman isn't going to mess a character image because she's black, that's not my point nor what I said. I'm just saying that if a character was originally presented as ****ing white then maybe a white actress should play it in the remake. I'd react the same, as everyone else, if a white actress was to play an Arab, a black or an Asian. Every race has talented people in them so why play on them. But I read it's going to a live-reimagining so most likely there going to reboot the whole thing and that would make sense now. I didn't respond to you in appreciation of your "smart" replies you called me racist and I had to put your little rude ass in place. But it's not my job to educate you or teach you good manners on how to respect people's opinions. Don't be too happy about yourself darling. You're not smart or above anyone else because you're pretending like you're taking the high road. You've been doing a lousy job ever since we started this conversation by twisting my words and using what I said as an excuse to spread your ignorant hatred. You lost ANY AND ALL points when you tried to compare Ariel (A FAIRYTALE CHARACTER) to a white Woman playing Oprah in a BIOPIC! Lmfao the racism and ignorance Jumped TF out and you’re going to take the L for it. And it won’t be let down. Many of you are showing your ass in this post and it’s very telling. Save the BUT MY CHILDHOOD! And IM NOT WHITE! Because anti-blackness spreads across MANY other races and you are showing your racism whether you want to admit or not. I would never justify someone white playing Pocahontas but at this rate, its gonna happen y'all. it was written in Denmark by a danish writer yes, but it was NEVER specified where it was set, EVER, not once is it written “set in a kingdom along the European coastlines” lmao don’t make **** up and the actual Disney movie? It was set in *drumroll* the Caribbean she does NOT represent danish girls, (btw wanna know something? black danish girls exist 🤭) her skin color, race, ethnicity has absolutely zero impact on the story. taking someone else’s representation for themselves, Chile please, they still have the original movie if they WAnt TO sEe SOmeONe WhO LOokS LIke thEm on screen. And this is a RE-IMAGINING of a fictional story about a fictional creature, it’s not a remake of the original movie, OR based on a real person Pocahontas can’t be played by a white girl cuz she was an actual Native American woman, not some folklore, and her ethnicity and identity is an integral part of the core storyline. ugh I’m sick of y’all comparing this to real life woc being played by white women, which btw Hollywood has been doing for decades, ever heard of whitewashing? yep so they been doing that to actual existing/ once existed people so don’t cry over dear miss fictional half fish being played by a black girl in a RE-IMAGINED movie

Angelm 8,655
Diversity is great, but if a character is already stablished for years, then, they should left things as they are. If Ariel was new, and didn’t had tons of generations growing up with her, then okay, but this time... Disney is running out of ideas, they should do more original movies instead of the remakes/live action films, we want original content, Aladdin flopped, Dumbo flopped, only The Lion King will be successful. Race is a very sensitive topic Anyways, congrats
