Tiana's blackness is integral to the setting and theme of her movie. Pocahontas being native is most of the plot of her movie.

Ariel's feet also bleed and is in excruciating pain through her whole human experience. And she losses the man, dies and becomes seafoam. But where is that part of the plot? Or mentioned at all? How does that come into the story? It's Disney; it's different.

They did not use that in any capacity other than maybe the design of the castle.  If you're that bothered by a fairytale creature not pale enough for your liking,

🎉condragulations gurl 🎉

You still have the animated movie.

I hope she ends up having the iconic red hair from the original movie!  This actress also has a very similar face shape to the animated Ariel, which is nice.

As far as the controversy in this thread goes... I can see why people could be upset by the casting choice.  When you’re growing up, and you see an iconic character who looks like you, and they become a big part of your life, to have a remake come out and have the character you loved be changed, especially visually(which is a huge part of a movie) can be gutting.

More roles should be created for people of all races, genders, etc.  People of all types should get the chance to feel empowered and seen, but I don’t know that changing existing cultural lore, visually or otherwise, is the best route to go.  While you would hope that people could connect just as well to a racially changed character, they might not be able to, and you can’t necessarily fault them for that.  Humans are raised in a society that places a lot of weight on visuals, and realistically, most of them are not going to deconstruct all that baggage for the sake of accepting one movie casting.

I'm talkin' 'bout forever, baby.

I had no idea why this thread had 200+ replies, but now I see:ladyhaha:

Casting a black Ariele when she's ingrained in the public perception as a ginger is a choice...

I’m really disappointed. It makes zero sense to not cast Ariel as a redhead. Its not like a character in a novel that can be left up to interpretation. Everyone know what Ariel is supposed to look like. This isn’t it.

Ariel’s red hair is not pivotal to her character. She could be any hair colour and race, especially in 2019. You are upset because you’ve spent years seeing her one way and this doesn’t match your expectations.

When Hermoine was cast as a black actress in the West End, people had the same reaction as you. However, when you look at Hermoine as a character, surely you can see her skin colour is irrelevant?

Little girls of colour will be thrilled to see themselves represented in a movie like this. Don’t you think our generation who grew up with Disney have already had enough white representation. The majority of the princes, princesses and characters have all been white.

Halle has a brilliant voice, she is about the right age for Ariel and I’m sure she’s done very well in her auditions.

It may not match your expectation but there are bigger and more important things happening by casting her.

People of Color can also be born with red hair if I’m not mistaken?

Genetic mutation can cause people of any color to be born with blonde or red hair. However- it’s a mutation- a freak occurrence, and it’s rare. People that are mixed race can also be born with any hair/eye color- as long as they are mixed with Euro OR have some sort of genetic mutation.

It’s about the portrayal of the character. A European fairytale. I personally just liked her because she was a Ginger like me. So it’s weird to not have a Ginger playing her in the live action. I’m also upset that they are making new music for the live action- I think the original has some of the best music in any animated film.

But whatever- I’ll just keep watching my cartoon version lol. Maybe the live action will turn out ok.

what a pity that the black panther actor is  not white... :triggered:

That doesn’t even make sense. The Black Panther being black is an inherent and integral part of the character.

The same way Batwomen would need to be a women.

Historically, there were no black royals in castles, that concept is inherently European.

The fairy tales that these animated movies are based on were also written by white European writers.

Why on Earth are they supposed to be black?

A fire-truck red haired, literal fish out of water, ocean kingdom princess is pretty damn close though

Close enough that the people complaining about not being able to see ""their"" version of Ariel should be somewhat satisfied

But it’s more about nostalgia than anything else. Ariel is a character most people grew up with. Sang her songs. Pretended to be her when going to the pool. Mera is not that. I personally have no attachment to Mera other than looks whereas Ariel has my soul. Ariel is my childhood. You cannot supplement another character for that. Mera is not that.

That being said I’ll personally wait for the movie until I decide if I like it or not. But nostalgia is a powerful thing. It’s feelings and memories about something you liked long ago that generally makes you feel good. Ariel is my childhood and it’s hard to see something you grow up with change. I personally have a hard time accepting change but may come around eventually.

Why cant I be unhappy about a casting decision that does not represent my childhood vision of a character? I’m not saying Halle may not be great in the role and that the movie may not be good. But at the moment nostalgia is in high gear. It has nothing to do about race. Like the 2014 version of Annie. It was weird at first when it was announced that Annie would not be the iconic redhead but I personally like the 2014 version over the original. Quvenzhané is fab in the role as Annie. But I couldn’t make that decision until I saw the movie so I will do the same for this.

Yes, they were based on stories by European writers. The story is nearly 200 years old and as it was written in Denmark, of course it was going to feature the mermaid as white. However, there is nothing wrong with modernising the representation of the tale. It's a tale that's been told a hundred times.

If you want to see Ariel as a red haired, white women, then go and watch literally ANY other Little Mermaid production that displays her in that way.

Not only that, if you are SO concerned with it being faithful to the original tale, I'd like to inform you that her having red hair is not specified. Her hair is only ever specified as "beautiful hair". Bright, red hair didn't exist in 1800's Europe either.  Making it bold red was a creative decision Disney made to distance Ariel from other famous mermaid films. Now Disney have decided to make a creative decision to cast a women of colour. What's the difference here?!

Why does it bother you (or others) so much that in this one adaptation she is being portrayed as a women of colour?
