Casting an African American for the purpose of representation for a period Danish movie while Disney has an incredible story about an African American princess that goes unused? Maybe this would make sense if Disney didn’t already have a film that highlights and celebrates actual African American culture. Is this not in some twisted way white washing? By just switching races of a popular princess...

So because there's ONE main character that is African American in a Disney movie they can't or shouldn't make any other main characters African American? That's laughable.

What about all the countless, endless main characters in Disney stories that are all white? Bet you got no problem with that.

None of you know how this is going to play out. Bottom line. And as if they couldn't make her wear a red hair wig as they would anyway regardless of who was cast :smh:

:wtfga: Literally misread Halle Berry twice until I saw the picture and was like :what::sharon:

But honestly if they make her hair red and eyes blue it can work very well. :tony:

A new face (to me) is a good thing, Hermione as Bella was a mistake... :selena:

I mean I love Halle but that's a  choice for the role

I'd rsther see Ariana Grande tbh, it's a perfect match for Ariel

... and now i just sit in silence.

Oh Lord.  I believe in more roles for people of color. I hope we have more black animated princesses. There is certainly room for more.

If you don't have anything nice to say don't say anything...

May I ask why? x

The nerve to even ask why :interestinga:

Ariel isn't just white she's an iconic ginger. Give the role to the appropriate actress!

I’m excited to see how it plays out. I just stated my feeling at the time, it’s really not a big deal to me who or what they cast as Ariel but from my point of view if they were going for African American representation the actual original African American princess would’ve been a better choice. Imagine if they didn’t make Moana and just changed Ariel to a Pacific Islander. Would’ve been just as bad. Certain characters deserve proper backgrounds and correct representation, but if they find a way to make a non-white Ariel make sense (by moving the setting to somewhere that’s not 19th Century Europe) I’m happy with that. I was just shocked because the other remakes stayed somewhat true to the original animated movies- and changing the main characters race can change so many factors (location, the race and look of other characters, time zone, etc). I’m exited to see how this goes.

Ariel was my favorite Disney Princess. I’m not about this decision because she doesn’t  correlate with the 80s version. They didn’t change the other Disney princesses in the live action adaptions, why did they have to do it to Ariel?

Y'all having borderline racist meltdowns over this :rip:

No wonder LG doesn't talk to her online fans anymore :rip:

It's a fictional movie :rip:  about fictional fish people :rip: based on another fictional movie :rip: adapted from another fictional story :rip: . Ariel's race plays no part in the original story, nor the animated adaptation :rip: please :rip:

And this actress has a heavenly voice. Very 1930's in style (not sure what the exact tone is called). Does she make music? I could listen to that clip all day :nick:
