Casting an African American for the purpose of representation for a period Danish movie while Disney has an incredible story about an African American princess that goes unused? Maybe this would make sense if Disney didn’t already have a film that highlights and celebrates actual African American culture. Is this not in some twisted way white washing? By just switching races of a popular princess...

Film is my passion, but honestly, this isn’t gonna do as well without heavy marketing

That makes no sense

And why?

Not happy. Ariel is an iconic ginger. It would be like casting a Weasley without red hair.

You know she can dye her hair or put a wig on.

I love the idea of an African American or Caribbean mermaid but I already know Disney won't do it justice because they'll never accurately depict colonialism in a film. Beyonce's interpretation of the Igbo Landing and the myth of the Igbo people 'walking back to Africa' screams mermaid epic.

A dream. I never liked the princesses and Vanessa was my favorite after Maleficent.

Honestly now I’m interested who’s gonna be casted for what role. Will they make most of the characters African/black, Will there be an actual racially diverse cast, or will she just stand out as the only non-white girl? I read they might do the story but in the Caribbean, which I think would be interesting, and there’s a lot of diversity to play with.

Naomi Scott does not look asian, when I say asian I mean like chinese/japanese looking

You can’t look Asian you know. Eastern Asian doesn’t represent the whole continent. Naomi Scott does look Asian.

I was gunning for an Oceanic/Pacific Islander interpretation of The Little Mermaid (minus the easy shoe-in of colonial themes), but that is a great way to put it. Love that.

The amount of racists in here. Gaga would be ashamed of you guys. I couldn’t even make it through the whole thread because I can’t stand racism.

The role doesn't demand any racial background so it really shouldn't matter if the character is white, black, asian or others :poot:

Why is this even a discussion I'm so confused
