LOVEDRUG 11,252
I see this as good, there's nothing wrong with practising your religion but specifically school teachers should not wear religious articles at work, since it could influence the children. Let them make up their own mind "through all the tears and all the lies, i'm gonna dance until i feel alright"
Cassidyfal 758
The conservatives.. doesn't surprise me. I am usually more on the conservative side of the economy but I wish they would just focus on the economy not this other sheet. I say who cares what someone wears. As long as it doesn't harm others or make other people feel bad, go ahead, wear whatever makes you comfortable. If someone gets offended seeing a religious accessory, like a rosary, then thats their own problem. As long as it doesn't intrude on other people, religion should not be something to hide, it should be something to embrace. Teach your children to accept that other people have different beliefs rather than hiding it from them. Thats just my opinion, I do understand how other people see this. What type of fake woke western freedom crap is that. How about respecting people not thinking like you instead of telling them they need a brain check lmao? Religion mixed with work often give bad results because of a few people who don't respect secularism anymore once they get some religious freedom given to them. That's why it's better to separate both clearly even if it's sad cause most folks would respect it tho . A national railway company (SNCF) went for an open minded position when it comes to its employees religion and quickly received demands to pray during the day then demands for the company to give them places to pray etc and when the company refused cause they weren't religious life organizers it created tensions. That's just an example. It's just better to say that religion under any form is out of the workplace with people doing what they want in their private life. It's not about telling people how to dress it's about. 9 hours ago, Cassidyfal said: If someone gets offended seeing a religious accessory, like a rosary, then thats their own problem. HotLikeMexico 6,535
I’m not religious either but I find this wrong. So is a person who has to wear a religious garment because of their beliefs barred from their job? That in itself is discriminatory. Unless that person is actively preaching and being a nuisance is it such a problem for someone to wear their religious items and keep to themselves? Didymus 34,380
Ridiculous. The idea of "neutrality" in public sector jobs is nothing but wishful thinking. It sounds logical to most Westerners upon first hearing but when you dissect it, it falls to pieces. The effect bans like this have is that people are stimulated to regard the government as a disembodied, devoid-of-personality institution that is not run by individuals but by a set of unquestionable rules. I have a personal problem with this because it destimulates democracy. The second effect is that religion is cast even more as an "other" of society, which is nothing but fuel for questionable political ideologies, especially since the only religious symbols usually on public display are Islamic. There goes your neutrality. A lot of people in the West need to grow some balls (no misogyny intended) and start caring about actual issues. We're fighting useless and counter-productive wars in the Middle East and, oh wait, we're also in an environmental crisis. The fact that people think this bullshit is important already proves my previous statement: legislation like this gives a false sense of security and democracy. Yuck. To tell me god bless you when you know that I'm an atheist, it's disrespecting. There's this idea that we always need to respect religious people, but atheists don't get respect back. It's easy to say "move on with your life" but you know that it's not like that in reality lol What do you want to be respected for, though? You don't believe in God, great. You have no atheist traditional dress, rituals, morals, mythologies, events,... What can religious people respect but your lack of religious beliefs? What are you asking? Nothing. You're just frustrated. Because you don't own public space. If you're seriously demanding that people change their whole behavior because you want your opinion to be the silent standard then you're a lot more like religious fundamentalists than you probably realize. If you want to own a public platform through atheism, then do it. Create your own non-religion and demand respect.

That's just an example. That has nothing to do with this ban though. It's just something that happens when there are enough people in one job. The perfect analogy is the divide between smokers and non-smokers. I've done countless jobs where smokers got a free pass to take extra breaks (while being paid) while non-smokers weren't allowed to join them. There is nothing inherently religious about people demanding privilege because they think they can. The difference with garments is that public sector jobs have no uniform, i.e. a standard rule set. Muslims wearing headscarves to work is challenging the Western notion of visual neutrality (which is never real neutrality, obviously) and bans like this are the result of that. The paranoia surrounding headscarves is similar to people objecting to visible piercings and tattoos in public sector jobs, as if those are a breach of "neutrality", indicative of a wild, irresponsible lifestyle. See? Standards of neutrality are never neutral. They're a top-down power discourse of control, and religious symbols are only one victim of this discourse. The message is clear: when you're doing your job, you have to completely empty yourself of personality and reflect "the government" in an illusory "neutral" way. The underlying logic is that if you're being yourself, this interferes with your job. That is the bottomline that everyone is missing when they are supporting bans like this. This isn't about Muslims, this is part of an undercurrent of Western imperialism directed at its own citizens. "Be yourself on your own time, you're here to work!", that is the face of Western "neutrality" and none of us would seriously subscribe to that if they would think about it for just a minute because it doesn't do anything good for us. The only people who profit are the kind of people that profit from citizens willingly surrendering their personality for "the greater good". Dictators. Poissonche 12,366
I remember waiting to get tested for chlamydia the day after the CAQ's election last October and this was the first law they announced. This, and how they were going to proceed to refuse more and more immigrants. I already knew the CAQ was made up of a bunch of racist, anti-ecology, money hungry fools, and that Quebec was the exact same for voting for them, but I couldn't bring myself to believe that, in a climate of climate crisis (we luv puns), THIS was their priority. Rejection, minority oppression. And now the law as actually passed? This is a mess. I am disgusted. I am pissed. Clothing should be a personal choice. Wearing religious symbols on your own body has nothing to do with your job. The only religious symbols that should be banned are the ones in public spaces: hospitals, schools, the f*cking parliament, because PLACES should be neutral. But your own body? It's yours. It's funny how fast the CAQ was to ban people from wearing stuff on their own body, but how hard they refuse to remove the crucifix from the parliament. Why? Because this new law is rooted in racism and definitely targeted at Muslims. Many examples of prime minister François Legault's islamophobia can be found in his speeches. The worst one is his response to creating and official national day against islamophobia on the anniversary of the terrorist attack against Quebec's mosque: "no need for a day against islamophobia in Quebec, since there is no islamophobia in Quebec". The problem with Québécois culture is that it's so racist and intolerant, but everybody's in denial. Sorry if none of this wall of text makes sense, I'm tired and angry. Just wanted to vent a little.
