Yes exactly! I understand if they ban religion if its used or practiced. I understand if someone prays during their job. I understand if someone covers their face. I understand removing all religion from the work place but, wearing a hijab is not a religion practice and does not interfere or used in the job. Hindu men and women also wear "hijab" and they cant remove it, they should be allowed to work for government. Same to wearing a cross or anything other religion clothing.

Im a Muslim and I do not believe in Hijab at all, many sects in islam dont. None of my family wear hijab. But that does not mean I should ban other people from doing so.

I think we agree on something for a change

Right? My family was raised catholic and we never ever wore crosses. My neighbors all had cross jewelry. But who gives a sh*t if a woman teaches geometry with a jesus cross on her necklace. Same for any other religious clothing article or accessory. Why shouldnt there be a policeman wearing a turban? Why strip their spirituality away.

I mostly agree with this.  I think there needs to be exceptions for certain wings of public offices like those that offer support to religious people but generally, the state needs to be separate from religion and that should really apply to those working for the state.

You and anyone who is in favor of this has no understanding of the Sikh religion and probably possesses an appalling amount of ignorance in the guise of “liberal secularism.” Absolutely disgusting law in a country where the leader of the NDP-the left wig party- is a Sikh who wears a turban. Expect this bigoted law to disappear if he has any say in the upcoming elections.

Its weird because its like they are assuming that a woman wearing a hijab is not capable of practicing the law without using her religion. Its like they are assuming if you are a christian, you might deny science so cant teach it. This assumption of groups is very harmful!

Anyway, we might disagree on everything but you always have an open mind and question me or without being disrespectful or assuming negative things.

Its not that interesting, it happens in france all the time. Remember they did not allow women with hijab to go to the beach? also, in france wearing a hijab is kinda illegal in certain circumstances. Quebec is connected to France so..

Exactly. It’s Islamophobia masked as secularism

As an atheist it always disturbs me to see a worker with a cross or when they say god bless you or things like that or if the worker is a Jew and knows that I’m Israeli they start to talk about the religion and Jewish stuff..

I think it’s time to understand that not everyone is religious and public places should be neutral.

Religious people shouldn’t be above others or get a special treatment, it’s pretty simple..

I think the issue is your pathetic simple mindedness in thinking that someone is forcing something down your throat by wearing something. Grow up.

Sometimes its just new atheists who hate religion and are not aware of what they are asking for. They are atheists but do not understand what secularism is. Im a Muslim and understand what secularism and separation between state and church more than them. Some atheists think rejecting religion makes them smart but that is not enough.

But yes alot of it is islamophobia

OBEY

Announced a few hours after the law passed: a girl who is currently studying to become a teacher will contest the constitutionality of the law in court, because the law prohibits her from teaching with her headscarf.

I always crack up when the government said "the law will apply to everyone, it's not targeting muslim women, christians will have to take off their religious symbols too".

To tell me god bless you when you know that I'm an atheist, it's disrespecting.

How is it disrespectful? They're literally wishing you well.

But it is separate! wearing a cross necklace does not bring christianity into government. A woman wearing a hijab working for government, does not bring Islam into government. Defining a Muslim woman by her hijab is wrong.

That's what the opposition party was defending. Saying that there's a difference between the state being secular and the people working for it.

You're not worth answering, learn to respect others, a really disgusting comment.

You can disagree with me and it's fine for me, but there's a way to say it.

because this is how I feel honestly, it's the most simple explanation, I don't believe in god and I want to be respected and not to connect me or wish me things that considering god.

Respect is both ways, just like I will not serve pork to a Jewish friends inside my house, because I respect them.

So sploosh your juice all over me you Riverboy

It seems to me an absurd and very racist measure. Religion is in a sense part of our culture and as such something that we can be proud of, and as a culture (healthy) it must be respected. And ignoring the fact of religion, are these symbols or garments really exclusive to religion? For example, I am a Christian (not fanatic) and not wearing a cross on the neck does not mean that I am not a Christian, the same with other beliefs, or that an atheist is wearing a t-shirt with a cross, does not mean that it is Christian . As I said before, they are not exclusive objects of religion and also ignoring the fact of religion a symbol does not have anything more special.

I don't see the harm of head coverings. Laws like this just target and further minoritize people who are already minorities in the government, public services and schools. I don't think this is an effort to assimilate people but to purge them from the public sphere when schools and police departments, etc should reflect their communities.

The Province of Quebec has had a history of intolerance with religion. In the 1940s I believe it was they tried to ban Jehovah's Witnesses

In France also for JW they made an insane tax specifically for them not long ago and the courts said it was discriminatory

In France as well as Quebec there's also been a lot of discussions over Muslim head coverings

Something about the French Governments... They don't seen to like religion and foreigners :awkney:

Canada, I thought you were a First World country.

Politics and culture in Quebec are very different from the rest of Canada...

They also have special autonomy in some things. For example they even have their seperate EI and government Retirement system

Quebec is like Hong Kong in China. They are technically part of the Nation but in many aspects operate seperately
