This was actually ver common back in the day, the same method was used for Snow White and Cinderella, though I believe they only did sceenes for those and not the entire movie. Not sure if this is also the case here.

Additional fun fact: The Simpsons still do it.

Happened with most of the cartoons I think. It was a good way of capturing the movements. Nowadays we have computers that do this work.

Did you know that the famous “I will never let go Jack” scene from Titanic was filmed in a kiddy pool?

Yes. Early Walt Disney cartoon humans had very flimsy and wobbly arms and legs. Then for Snow White they resorted to this method and it turned out good.

What is super interesting is you can very clearly see the beauty standards of the eras in which these films were made. The girl playing Ariel is your quintessential late 80s-90s beauty, Snow White's is very 30s, etc. Super cool to see.

Also the Ariel one felt like I was watching the bloopers to a ****o

I think they only do it for sceenes where there the motion of the characters is very complex.

For instance, there is an episode where homer learns how to dance, and I think the official Simpsons account uploaded their "real life reference version" on their facebook, but I can't find it anymore :(
