The VMA's are for people that want something from them. Falling artists want a cushion to fall on and rising artists need exposure.

Considering how many big stars were not there and weren't for so many years it's no surprise that the ratings are this low. The VMA's offer nothing but that small promo boost and most artist don't value it as important enough anymore. This cycle continues into infinity unless MTV as a whole will be canceled.

I'm sure they want better ratings, but it's more about the cultural moment/online sharing and discussion. It makes sure people still know MTV exists and 'matters' and it provides boosts and sometimes good performances for people to digest. It's a pop event that matters even when not watched ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ .

Honestly, I think they'll move the VMAs (and maybe all award shows) to a primarily online event (still aired on MTV proper of course). If they were smart they'd partner with YouTube or Netflix. But really, they'll wait for Viacom's response to Netflix/Disney+/Amazon and steam on that. Once the VMAs are fully a streamed affair, I think they'll rise again in viewership (I doubt they'll share hard ratings one that happens).

Problem with VMAs this day is that they don't have big names with a big fanbase that will watch the show... GP is not going to watch it... VMAs were and always will be for the fans... and when you have only people with small fanbases or people that rely only on gp.for success than of course, the ratings will be bad... The only one that was there with huge fanbase was Taylor and that's it .

i agree with all 3 posts.

the only exposure artist get is when they upload the videos to Youtube. (i also watched the performances i cared about on youtube) Maybe the VMAs still have some name recognition when it comes to the performances and the GP knowing that eg Taylor performed there. But no one will bother to watch live anymore. And all TV cares about is the live numbers.

with that in mind out of the 1.9m total - 0.9m were in the 18-40 demo, everyone cares about. And 0.9 demo is surprisingly "good" for TV nowadays. still, it makes me wonder how MTV gets their money to sponsor such a ratings flop, when most of the money come from the commercials and I can't see people paying good bucks to have their ads show during the VMAs.

it's really weird that they keep going, but it's good to see the cute boosts everyone who performed gets. so in the end that's all that matters. whether it's live or on youtube the next day, the boosts are real.

They need to change the way they are presenting VMAs... Maybe they should try streaming it on YouTube, twitch or anywhere tbh... Also, they need to call artists that actually have fanbases... It's ok to call smaller artists that are new and that need exposure but the show can't rely just on them... It will simply not bring good ratings

I've got an "F" and a "C" and I got a "K" too And the only thing that is missing is a bitch like "U"

That Gaga won't release (and that she basically changes her plans up very often, meaning he can't really spill some tea on her releases even if he has something from the source, because she is so indecisive about it)

I can’t imagine Gaga and her team looking at OTR back in April and moving the single 5+ months away.....but if they really did that then it shows me a couple things

1. Her team is getting more competent at avoiding competition on the charts

2. Her team really believes the lead has a shot at #1....
