Why Madonna is my favorite vocalist

This is going to be a controversial thing for me to say, but Madonna is absolutely 100% my favorite vocalist. Not just performer, songwriter, dancer, etc - but my favorite vocalist. For the majority of her career Madonna has been called a bad singer,  or not given enough credit for the amazing vocals she has. She may not be a technically trained singer (even though she has had voice lessons), and maybe isn't the type of singer to do any over the top high notes, or vocal runs. But there is something about the tone of her voice, and the way you can feel the emotion of the song when she sings, that makes me adore her voice. It brings me comfort, joy, and can help me let out all of my emotions during a good cry. In certain studio tracks like "Nothing Fails", "X-Static Process", "Gone", "Intervention", "Oh Father", "Promise to Try" "Spanish Eyes", "I'll Remember" and countless more, her vocals just have a way of making me feel at home.

Here are some good examples of live performances, where you can truly hear the beauty in her voice and where you can feel that deep emotion that she is singing through:

Sorry to burst your bubble, but in my opinion,

Vocalists have to be at least decently equipped with vocal techniques and skills. Madonna displays a minimal of those, so she's a singer, not a vocalist. :koons:

Singing with emotion =/ vocalist. She's a mediocre singer at best.

And in my opinion, emotion counts more than technique. I'd rather listen to a someone singing with little flaws in their voice, yet full of emotion and passion, rather than a technically trained singer who is more focused on getting everything right than singing from the heart.

But i respect your opinion, everyone likes different things. I know a lot of people who prefer technically trained singers, who hit a bunch of notes and all that. But for me, miss Ciccone is where its at.

I honestly don't care about who's the better vocalist, but I just want to say that you don't need to have a powerhouse voice to be a good vocalist. It's about the type of songs that you sing, the kind of emotions you want to express.

Personally, I still think Gaga's voice was the best in the beginning, because she was not focused in giving a strong voice, she was focused in the song itself. She didn't sing like Whitney Houston, but she cried her heart out. Gaga cares too much about technique, and that is why I'm no longer a stan.

Same with Madonna, her focus is not doing powerhouse.  Singing with emotion doesn't require big pipes, look at Paparazzi VMA 2009... That last chorus still gives me chills, damn.

Bjork is one of the best vocalists for me and she's no Beyoncé. On the other hand, I can't listen to Beyonce, Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey or Christina Aguilera without roll my eyes (except Lemonade, that is a good example of a good album that doesn't rely on strong pipes).

(on the other hand, you have Adele. I love Adele's voice, she has PIPES, but she's not technically perfect. She sings with her voice, and her voice is already amazing with her own tone)

On topic, I'm listening to Madonna's Dark Ballet and I just feel that she has some troubles adjusting her concepts to her voice.  The robotic effects, the autotunes, the placements, all a bit all over the place, and then there's an idea behind it that simply is not effective. Maybe she should had released the whole album at once instead of these one songs releases, since the album is supposed to be a cohesive work. So that's it, Madonna is a good vocalist but it appears she has troubles placing her voice correctly into her ideas.

I do love Crave and I Rise.

I would LOVE to hear a demo of "Dark Ballet" where she sings it raw the way it was done at the Met Gala. She sounded so angry, and emotional. It wasn't a perfect delivery, but I absolutely loved the way she sang it.

I am sorry, but I wouldn't be if your opinions weren't pitiable :laughga:

I honestly love Madonna's work, she's a great artist, but I ain't feeling the new album like at all it's dreadful. And I wouldn't call her a vocalist, she's a singer and a great performer I think she sould maybe just stop with the new music and become a legacy artist and tour her best songs and albums a.k.a. Ray of Light, Confessions on a Dance Floor  and Like a Prayer :ohwell:

Says the Mariah fan :huntyga:

I don't think Madonna should ever repeat herself. That is her whole narrative after all. She doesn't want to be a legacy artist, and shouldn't be.

True. I feel like she does have a storyteller voice, full of emotion and passion. I loved the American Life performances where it just felt so raw and intimate. Where her voice was just so golden.

Saying that as if it was something bad, but we all know who has more #1s and can sing the other one under the table :reductive:

Well then maybe she should do something along that has class and quality to it, because the Madame X songs ain't cutting it so far and neither are the performances she's been dragged for it almost everywhere.
