Toronto is alright for that but Montreal is the best city we found for that in Canada

I think Toronto is way overpacked. I had the pleasure to visit in december and I thought that the public transportation was perfection tbh. However, I will scape from there during the winter months without second guessing

Believe it or not Columbus, Ohio is booming right now too and facing a housing problem too. 

Our population went from 670,000 in 2010 to 905,000 now. 

In 2010 we were the 18th Biggest City in the United States and now we are 13th. We're expected to be in the Top 10 by 2025. 

USA Today put out an article last week that said Columbus just surpassed San Francisco in population. Crazy.

If our government would just raise retirement age like other developed nations are doing to compensate for longer life expectancies and lower birth rates maybe we Wouldn't have to accept such a large number of immigrants to keep our workforce and demographics stable

 

Harper did what was necessary when he raised it to 67 and Trudeau for campaigning went and reversed a necessary reform

 

And what does he do Instead to keep demographics stable? Raise immigration from 250,000 a year to 330,000 a year, a number that is hard to absorb without infrastructure and housing constraints (and housing was already tight to begin with before his annual increase)

 

Our economic challanges will never be solved as long as people oppose making necessary sacrifices

 

Until ppl in this country accept that we can't keep retirement age at 65 anymore, there's gonna be pain one way or another...

 

Either the economy stalls from too many ppl retiring and our standard of living drops, or we have to accept an unreasonable number of young people yearly to compensate and the unbearable housing costs also affect our standard of living

 

Canadians stubborn stance on keeping retirement the standard 65 is costing us more pain than the pain if just working 2 or 3 extra years

 

USA, UK, Germany, Italy, Portugal... Countless other first world nations have either raised or are making plans to do so... We need to as well

My suburb city (Brampton) also climbed up the ranks fast

 

We were pretty irrelevant 20 years ago now we are the 8th biggest city in Canada and 3rd biggest city in the Toronto area

 

I know the feeling of growing pains

 

When I moved here 14 years ago it was a peaceful medium sized city now when I leave the gym at 8:30 pm I can no longer make a left on the road and it's supposed to be past rush hour

It is basically lol. The Toronto Metro and cities near it are like 20% of Canada's population

 

Canada's second largest city (Montreal) is not much more than half the size and that city is growing much slower too

 

Of course NYC is over 8 million I think for the city alone

 

Toronto just crossed 6 Million for the metro.

 

Although the golden horshoe area is practically all attached as one big city and that area is 9 Million...

 

But some cities attached that are further out are no longer considered part of the metro

 

Like this city "Cambridge" for example is considered part of the Toronto metro and the next city that is completely attached too "Kitchener" no longer is

 

So in technical terms the metro is 6 Million but the area of attached civilization in Toronto is around 9 to 9.5 Million

 

So Canada is the 2nd largest country in the world by area but 1/4 of the population is concentrated in the golden horshoe area

Ur part of the problem then if u think it's not big deal to keep it at 65. It's not sustainable the system was never designed to have such a high percentage of the population collecting CPP in relation to ones contributing to it

 

65 is a very old standard that was set when ppl lived way less years and average population age was much lower. It's time for the population to stop being petty and accept reality

 

I just explained to u why keeping retirement at 65 is forcing us to except so many immigrants

 

If we don't except so many immigrants, the working demographics take a hit. We can't accept only 100,000 longer term if we don't reform old age security or raise retirement

 

Either we suffer with too many immigrants straining housing and infrastructure, or we suck it up and work a few extra years

 

It's one or the other. This demographic chance has no way of dealing with it without some unpleasant change

 

Ppl expecting the government to fix problems but never willing to accept some sacrifices is part of societies problem and why issues get kicked down the road and not resolved. Politicians piss me off but so does the public tbh

That moment when old people would soon have to work till they die . Thank God I'm 22 and I'm seeing what mess the world is becoming. I am not working beyond 55. So I have about 30 years to build my portfolio so I could live off that and not give one eff about the government.

The average person spends more years retired now than every before and ur talking about the world becoming a mess as if it was the apposite

 

Decades ago many didn't even get to enjoy retirement at all

Decades ago, someone in a position like yours would have worked their manual labor job until they died. They wouldn’t have had an option to take online courses as they worked or even be a “personal trainer”. People didn’t waste time going to gyms, they worked hard at their jobs and around their home. 

You might feel different after you’ve worked for fifty years at your job you don’t even want to be at now. You might be ready for a few years to relax, do hobbies, visit family, travel, etc. 

Wanting to have a few years at the end of your life isn’t any more being a spoiled baby than people looking for their job that they are “passionate” over. Generations ago, people weren’t so concerned over being “happy” at work.
