Why are a lot of people obsessed with a song's chart placement?

I think they're fun to track. Plus it's nice to see our faves in the top ten  or anywhere close to it

Fan = loving an artist. Loving an artist = reading stuff about her. Reading stuff about her = finding out chart information. Debate closed. :ally:

I am a fan and I don't care about that stuff. I watch interviews and love the messages of the songs and the whole artistic vision of each album. even the people she's worked with like Steven Klein and all that. I never cared about learning about chart information...

You just can't be a fan if you don't know her  #1 songs, how Bad Romance was blocked, the fact that she has 6 consecutive #1 albums this decade, how Just Dance was a sleeper hit and things like these.

Ya I still don't care about that stuff.. I mean I like how bad romance compares horror and a bad relationship and references Hitchcock movies. How she used Haus of gaga is kind of reference to bauhaus and gave that goth vibe during that whole era with kind of industrial beats. Still never cared to find out if it was number one... I like things that are not number one and I consider myself a fan of them.

Because some stans want their fave to be super successful on the charts, and if a song is a hit on the charts, it means the artist is famous, loved and popular, at least.

Basically!

Ppl like sharing their interests with others including art

If ur fav has a hit on the charts it means others are enjoying what u are...

Also hits count towards an artist's legendary status to be remembered

Nothing wrong with stanning for all this! I like charts too!

It’s essentially validation that your faves are doing well and that their music is being well-received. We all loved Shallow before it peaked at #1 but it’s so much more satisfying to say that it’s a #1 HIT.

For me I also just find it interesting to track how songs are doing and the strategy that also goes into getting songs/albums to get closer to #1. :gayhat:

These are general culture for a fan. The way  you talk makes it seem like you think I don't love her lowest-peaking songs or that I use charts to judge if I love a song or not or that I pressure her to get hits. Following charts is not about that. It's essentially just information about her songs. If you are fan and have a connection with her songs, you read about them, check their Wiki and in time memorise their chart position + you get to know her career path and how it translates into numbers.

I agree with those saying it's like sports. You have a 'team' to root for and track stats and whatever. Some people just enjoy that. Of course stans can take it too far sometimes, but that's true of any hobby.

It's funny because I grew up obsessed almost exclusive with indie bands, where charts were meaningless. They weren't even something we considered. But in those fandoms there were plenty of people concerned with the opposite thing, bands getting 'too popular', 'selling out', 'becoming too mainstream' etc.

I remember on a message board for my fav band when a song of theirs got played on a popular teen show... omg meltdowns lol. For some fans it really was the end of the world.

And now I follow Gaga where the dynamic is completely different... interesting to think about!

I am not saying that you aren't a fan or that you don't like her low charted songs. I think everyone is a fan for different reasons and I was more responding to you saying that you aren't a fan if you don't know charts because I don't think that is true.  I understand what you are trying to say that it's general knowledge about a song but for me personally I put more emphasis on the creative aspects and not so much charts so that kind of thing just fades to the back and I couldn't tell you how a song charted but I can tell you about all the artists she referenced and knowledge about the music by itself because this is what I like about her and is why I consider myself a fan. People can know everything about charts and be a fan but people can care less about and still be a fan. It's great if someone is competitive and wants to see their favorite win and be on top but something about numbers and creativity just don't mix well for me because then it becomes a machine or a race that everyone is trying to win and nothing original comes out of people trying to generate the best song rather than do what they want. Like I said this is my opinion and why I don't care about charts and why I still consider myself a fan.

They are fun to follow, and it’s nice too see your fave doing well. That’s about where it ends for me.

Sometimes people take it too far. On other sites, I’ve seen people actually declare that they are “un-stanning” someone because of their chart positions. (I’m pretty sure that means you weren’t a Stan in the first place if something that ridiculous makes you “un-Stan”).
