Katy talks about TD’s success

It's interesting to hear artists's perception of their own success. I  wonder how it feels for Gaga. We all kinda guess but it's different when you hear it from her mouth.

I think she's lying about 1) not knowing the hugeness of the TD era, and 2) the whole 'soul', 'spirit' thing guiding her music - I think she is most guided by charts... and tbh, she has spoken openly about this before.

I don't think she's lying about the hugeness of the TD era. Anyone at their peak NEVER knows that's their peak. Yes she knew she broke a lot of records with it but she didn't know that would be her peak.

Sorry but she HAS to be lying. Like, even when E.T. reached #1, that made her only the 3rd female in history to do it, after Whitney and Mariah so she had to know that. And also the way her label did everything they could for LFN to go #1 speaks for itself.

I can relate to her in a way, of not understanding the impact of one’s self. I remember when I was told I was elected “king” of my class in high school, told I won valedictorian accommodations, and other achievements like that, I didn’t feel a sense of “I knew I could do it,” it was more like “how is this even possible.”

I mean I guess I could blame it on the depression from being bullied which led to a separation from my emotions :sis:

Sure Katheryn. But you certainly felt it when it didn't hit #1 :huntyga:

I think she's saying this because she feels she should have acted more grateful for TD's success at the time because her career's at a very different place now. She maybe too her TD success for granted and that extended onto Prism. Little did she know that after Dark Horse, she'd only have one top ten single in the US for the next 5 years. Seriously, Chained To The Rhythm is the only top 10 she's had in the US since Dark Horse. Never Really Over could well change that but let's not pretend that she probably thought her career would be in a very different place right now after the success of TD. When Prism took off initially, she likely thought it was official - she was going to have huge hits with every album, sell millions of copies of every album, have tours grossing hundreds of millions. To have it all slowly come crashing down till we got to the point where she is now, she's likely thinking: "Wow, I should have enjoyed my heyday so much more at the time." I don't buy it that she didn't take in her success in the moment. She was in her documentary being sad that ET wasn't taking off in the UK even though the song had just been released, the video hadn't even been shot and Kanye wasn't even a part of the song (it eventually peaked at #3 so she had nothing to worry about). I think it's a case of she was just too cocky at the time and now, looking back on it, now she's been humbled by her recent flops, she feels like she should have been more grateful. She's just dressing it up with stuff about her spirit and soul but she's really not saying anything of substance.

I haven't watched it but if the title is indeed correct...
I love the girl, but she got SO conceited, big headed, and like...almost rude during the Teenage Dream era.
Just watch her interviews before and after TD.
I think during One Of The Boys it started getting to her, and then her biggest album rolled around and she just changed.
Witness's flop was absolutely a reality check for her, and I think she's much more fun and sweet now.

I get what she's saying. She was touring and making the videos and promo, performances, award shows and then she had to record PRISM and tour again (note that her tours last longer than Gagas) and then SuperBowl. Like she didn't stop one moment to realize how huge everything was. I think "flopping" with Witness helped her realize that.

I agree with you but I think she has always been very humble but when things come easily in life, we take them for granted. I guess getting #1 hits from TD album was very easy for her. Maybe she can aknowledge the effort and hard work behind a single/album campaign better now than she did before.

Ghost Face

This is just my opinion so don't come 4 me, but to me it feels like she's acting. She just doesnt feel totally honest.  Like she plays the game to be loved by the media. Idk

It's an honor.

Smother Em Eh

Wow, her personality is so different here. Less goofy and more serious, but I like, it tho.

I'm glad that she realized that she didn't take advantage of the success she had in the TD Era, and now she is. Sometimes it takes something to not go as planned or what you expected for you to appreciate what you had.

But hey it's not the end of the world for her or her career. Every Artist has their flop era. This is radio queen, Katy Perry we are talking about, she'll come back on top again in the future.

I agree, it was shady moments like this that made me be rather averse to her up until Prism:

That American Idol bit is really revealing because at that time, she was just a guest judge. It's one thing to be a bit cocky if you're a full-time judge, but just to be there as a guest and be lording it up and shading others on the panel is a sign that you've started to believe your own hype.

But I agree, she's a lot nicer now and it's like this original Katy doesn't really exist anymore. There are plenty of artists out there who never come down from the clouds no matter what so I respect her for grounding herself again.
