Trade has become a much more complex web in this global economy than when he was young It's no longer just putting tarrifs on an import and so your at home products become more competitive and imports fall because #1. With such a complex chain system, parts and resources for each manufactured product comes from many different countries. You could put tarrifs on a car and reduce its imports but if you sell parts to that country to make the car u just lost exports as well #2 countries have become more specialized in selling in bulk what they are most competitive in. That means each country does not have enough of many industries to produce for themselves. A tarrifs will raise the cost of the import but it won't help local businesses that don't exist It's like putting all these tarrifs on cheap Chinese products. The US hardly produces any anymore. You can't help an industry that hardly exists anymore in the first place #3 there's usually multiple countries that sell something in bulk amounts. If you put tarrifs in one companies will just look to buy from another country. Are u supposed to put tarrifs on everyone then and take on the whole world in a trade war? Tarrifs might have helped the domestic industries as far back as the 1950s but it no longer works that way in the highly globalized 21st century economy Supply chains are too interlinked. Does he literally think the Mexican government is sending people over the border intentionally by themselves? People are leaving the country on their own because they can't earn money you idiot If you actually wanted to stop illegal immigration, wouldn't you consider maybe improving the ridiculous immigration system or help Mexico build a stronger economy so its citizens wouldn't feel the need to leave their country in the first place? I received pushback for saying exactly what you said in the other tariff thread and I still don't understand why since they’re the facts And then those same people ended up agreeing with me Anything for cheap likes I guess Anyways yes Trump does not understand much of anything, especially economics. Yes that is exactly what he thinks: "When Mexico sends its people, they're not sending the best. They're sending people that have lots of problems and they're bringing those problems. They're bringing drugs, they're bringing crime. They're rapists and some, I assume, are good people, but I speak to border guards and they're telling us what we're getting." Republicans don’t care about immigration. They had 2 years of having the House, the Senate and the presidency and did nothing to help reform our immigration system. This is outrageous- ever since this Trump trade war with China started, I've seen a huge price jump on even basic everyday items that I'm used to buying for cheap.
