I don’t want to be called lesbian because that is not true, is this concept too difficult? Jeez... I thought that LGBT environment would be accepting and understanding but look what is written in this thread I think @Successga is right to say there's nothing "hurtful". Yea it's annoying for sure to be called something that he/she isn't, but it's not hurtful if you have at least one third of a backbone. On another note, it's actually more damaging that the majority of ppl assume we're all str8 from birth. As many of us know all too well lol. While that assumption is pretty understandable culturally, historically, blah blah blah, if anything is hurtful at this point, it's that. Get the pinot ready, because it's turtle time. Why does he need to treat rumors of being called gay as if he killed somebody? Like I get it, it’s annoying and everyone reacts differently to things, but Shawn is a public figure. He has an entire team behind him, including a publicist. He needs to stop reacting publicly this way because now it’s just making me view him in a negative light. I’m pretty sure Nick Jonas and Justin Bieber got it worse than he did and look at him now. Even Bruno Mars has a TON of rumors about him being gay. They brushed off the rumors and even played along a few times and now no one even talks about it like that. Shawn keeps bringing this **** to light and making it seem like the worst thing to ever happen. A panic attack watching a movie about two gay guys? Are you kidding me? Why is that something he feels the need to publicize? I feel bad for Shawn because I have been in his shoes IN A SENSE that I’ve constantly been accused before I was ready but I NEVER demeaned being gay just to get the point across. I supported the LGBT community before I ever considered myself a part of it or before anyone even knew. Shawn, in the way he’s publicly handling this, is doing more damage in my opinion because now with him getting all defensive all the freaking time just makes me more suspicious. I respect your opinion, but Shawn has in no way been homophobic or demeaned being gay. This isn’t about sexual orientation, it’s about treating him with respect and not forcing him into a mold of what people want him to be. You said that Shawn is doing more damage, and I respect your opinion, but I feel that the people harassing him are the ones doing the damage. They're the ones teaching his young fans that it’s okay to force someone into a mold based on meaningless stereotypes. They’re the ones who refuse to respect who he says he is and instead harass him for not being who they want from him. He should be allowed to defend himself. Being stereotyped in any way is never a positive feeling, especially when the entire world is forcing those stereotypes onto you. culturalbaptism 2,904
Let's get real for a sec? I think Shawn Mendes is a homosexual. He either doesn't accept himself or his label don't want the world to know he's gay so he won't lose sales and make less money for them. If he was a heterosexual guy, he would brush it off like every other heterosexual guy in this industry. Why is he still getting meltdowns over it? There's nothing wrong with being gay. Aren't you a "straight" dude? You know inside you you like girls, right? Then there's no reason to complain. Judas is coming, let the cultural baptism begin. What I said is that it’s disrespectful to force someone into a mold of who people want them to be based on stereotypes. It would be no different if Shawn was gay and everyone said “no, you’re straight.” Stereotyping someone and harassing them online trying to force them into a mold is incredibly disrespectful, regardless of sexual orientation. And either way, his sexual orientation is his own business, it’s not our place to hound him on it. Antichrist 9,818
i love how all of you are 'grow the **** up, if you were confident & secure with yourself you wouldn't mind it'. rewind back to high school when a group of jocks called you gay and your world started to melt down now imagine how he feels when a **** ton of people keep assuming something about him, but in his case, he isn't easy to brush it off, right? i suggest you to not bully him for not being confident enough, we're a fan of a person who dedicated an entire album against bullying, after all
witchcocktor 1,438
This is so contrived. His label is obviously the one forcing him to further pick at this subject. I'm 100% Shawn doesn't even want to bring this up, but it's his label, the label who needs Shawn Mendes to be the next big STRAIGHT heartthrob for young teenage girls to fawn over, is forcing Shawn to '' clear things up '' in interviews. You are an idiot if you don't realize this. An artist, and their team can easily say NO to these questions, that they aren't allowed to ask these questions, (just like nobody was asking Gaga about LG6 during Grammies, obviously it's a no go zone for her currently) but they are STILL talking about this subject. And of course they are, having a heartthrob that is rumored to be gay won't sell and become the next Justin Bieber. It's all about money, and the label trying to correct the image people have of Shawn Mendes. The gay rumors, to the label and his team, might be something they think is pushing Shawn back from a bigger audience, and they want to correct that, all the while creating controversial news about '' GASP, Shawn Mendes doesn't want to be called gay?! HOMOPHOBE! '' and on the other hand, making it seem like the worst thing ever for people to think he is gay because he is hurting over it SOOOO MUCH, causing his fans and the LGBT community to point fingers at anyone for thinking he is gay cuz '' YOU ARE BULLIES; LEAVE HIM ALONE. '' I don't care what the dude is, but this is all just manufactured and contrived, and it's easy to see the real reason behind it, money, trying to replicate the success of other male heartthrobs, and maybe even kpop male groups. Stevo 633
Yeah well you wouldn't want to be labelled something you're not right? I have a similar problem to this and he's not saying being gay is bad. He's fed up with all this nonsense and people trying to force their fantasies and labels on him. ANYONE would be pissed or annoyed especially when it's been going on for years. It doesn't help that he's a celebrity too.

How ironic not only coming from someone who is a big fan of an artist who preaches kindness but also was probably themselves were bullied for being gay in high school. I have to laugh. Poor guy though. Internet culture is so toxic and mean. I just find it so ironic that people who were bullied themselves have now become the bullies themselves behind their keyboards. Exactly. You people telling him to get over it are disgusting. People handle things differently.

Judas Society 3,584
Trust me, if people were assuming he's straight, he wouldn't find it "hurtful". It only "hurts" if people assume something you don't like to be or somehow find that unacceptable to be. He's starting to annoy me. As a gay man, I agree that people shouldn't force someone to come out. It is because we know that most people in the world views being LGBTQ+ is something bad or sinful or disgusting. We're like a disease to them that can be eradicated. Our community has fight to educate the masses and together with the LGBTQ+ allies and the LGBTQ+ celebrities, the world is changing. But until the day we stopped assuming that a person is straight unless being stated as LGBTQ+, the fight is not over. The same goes for women rights that has been going on for more than a century now and there are some parts of the world that still thinks that women cannot be seen in public without being chaperoned by a man. Unknowingly, his comments are actually quite hurtful to us because being a straight man (as he claims he is), he couldn't even began the comprehend what it means to be hurtful. And when he views it as being hurtful, it means he thinks the LGBTQ+ should be hurtful when we shouldn't be. I can think of countless straight celebrities who plays along when people assume anything about their sexuality because they know there's nothing hurtful about being who you are and continue to reinforce the notion that it's ok to be LGBTQ+ because that's who we are. I really hope there are people, adults, in his life that can help enlighten him about what he's feeling in regards to this because he's still growing up and maturing in the process.
