Poland's new public enemy: Gay people

Poland’s governing party, Law and Justice, has seized on the declaration and the issue of gay rights in its campaigning for European Union elections in May and for national elections this fall.

Where the party once attacked migrants as a threat to the soul of the country, gay people have become its public enemy No. 1 in recent weeks.

It is part of a growing trend across eastern and central Europe, where nationalist and populist parties are increasingly turning to cultural issues — and attacks on gay people — to rally their faithful.

“I think that Poland will be a region free from L.G.B.T.,” said Elzbieta Kruk, who is running on the party’s list for a seat in the European Parliament. “I hope it will be.”

The Rev. Marek Dziewiecki, a well-known Catholic priest and educator, told a local radio station in a recent interview that the plus in “L.G.B.T.Q.+” stood for “pedophiles, zoophiles, necrophiles,” and that the ultimate goal was to “make people into infertile erotomaniacs.”

how many times am i going to see a thread with some sort of bad news and have people proclaim the end of civilization? change is not done overnight, and of course there will be opposition and obstacles and fights and massacres, but we're still moving upwards. people are so quick to forget all the progress that was done for all kinds of human rights whenever some old geezer has something problematic to say.

People are allowed to feel mad and justifiably so.

No one is proclaiming the end of civilization, you're misframing their argument that way. All they said was that a backwards trend seems to be on the rise in the past decade across the world. They aren't saying it will all burn down and no one will have rights. It's undeniable, however, that hatred and right wing traditionalist rhetoric have been on the rise. You're trying to paint a picture of progress that has obstacles but is still going up. That's a questionable claim.

And massacres (in your example) aren't something to just shrug at ("of course there will be... massacres"). What a privileged thing to say.

Yeah it's true overall. But Poland is really moving backwards and it happens for years now.
